Description
This is an entry-level position. The Environmental Health Specialist I performs inspections and investigations of public and private establishments and other environmental situations to ensure compliance with local and state health and safety codes. Will work in assigned program to include either retail food establishments, childcares, and body art facilities, or wastewater and solid and hazardous waste
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The following examples are illustrative only and are not intended to be all-inclusive.)
  • Conducts field inspections and prepares reports related to the assigned program, or environmental conditions impacting air, water, and land that can affect human health due to communicable, zoonotic, and chronic disease.
  • Trains in the enforcement of Federal, State, and local regulations and ordinances related to assigned areas; works closely with superiors in selecting appropriate methods and procedures to use in resolving specific problems; receives training in and performs some duties in the enforcement of regulations and ordinances outside of assigned specialty.
  • Trains in and performs routine investigations of public complaints related to assigned specialty; may perform other investigations as assigned by supervisor
  • Provides general and technical information and advice to the public to answer questions and solve problems.
  • Uses excellent verbal communication skills to explain findings of investigations, field tests, and laboratory analysis to owners and managers of establishments and occupants of premises subject to Environmental Health requirements.

  • Responds to incidents that may result in exposure to disease, hazardous materials, or toxic substances.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Environmental Health, or a related field, one year of professional experience in a related program; or in lieu of bachelor's degree, incumbent must have four years of professional experience in a related program. A combination of experience and education may be considered.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS:
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License upon hire, with complying insurance. Review of motor vehicle record is required at time of hire and periodically throughout employment.
  • This position requires successful completion of a criminal background check including fingerprinting through a national database.
