Engineering Intern - System Monitoring, Diagnostics, and Controls

Colorado Springs Utilities is seeking to fill an Engineering Internship position to support the engineering needs of the System Monitoring, Diagnostics, and Controls (SDC) Section of the Operations Technical Services Department which provides engineering services to support the efficient and reliable operation of power plants and water treatment plants and wastewater treatment plants with the following key objectives.

  • Provide actionable intelligence to support efficient and reliable operations utilizing advanced data analytics and predictive maintenance technologies

  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities through effective root cause analysis and system optimization programs

  • Control System Engineering services to support the full lifecycle of our control system assets

In this role, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of tasks and projects to support the operational needs of the organization. Some of the specific responsibilities while in this internship will include the following:

  • Execute daily activities with a constant focus upon safety, including:

  • Following safe work practices to ensure personal safety

  • Making safety suggestions

  • Participating in pre-job safety briefings

  • Considering safety during task and project execution

  • Assist in the execution of engineering work, including:

  • Preparation of plans, designs, drawings, specifications, estimates, studies, schedules, recommendations, and reports associated with the implementation of tasks and small projects

  • Data analysis

  • Performance software maintenance and development

  • Control system optimization and maintenance

  • Consult with engineers, manufacturers, and others in investigating and troubleshooting operations and maintenance issues of plant equipment

  • Assist with the preparation of plant operations and maintenance performance reports, cost analysis, asset maintenance plans, asset optimization activities; provide recommendations based on analysis

  • Support operations and maintenance activities

  • Gather data and prepare technical reports, charts, and graphs, and apply engineering principles in the reporting and solution of engineering problems

  • Maintain records of activities and prepare reports on tests, research projects, and operational characteristics of machinery and equipment and their impact on plant performance

  • Review system drawings to identify discrepancies; update drawings to correct discrepancies

  • Assist with conducting studies and preparing reports

This internship can be summer only (5/28-8/9/24 at 40 hours/week) or summer and into the school year (minimum of 10 hours/week and up to 20 hours/week); summer plus the school year is preferred, but not required.

Successful applicants shall be working towards a degree from an accredited university in an engineering or science field of study. College majors that that may be considered for these internships are:

  • Chemical Engineering

  • Control Systems Engineering

  • Data Analytics

  • Electrical Engineering

  • Mechanical Engineering

  • Process Engineering

  • Hourly rate is dependent on year completed of academic degree, e.g., second year complete, third year complete, etc.
