Job description


Albany Fire is accepting applications for three vacant Single Role EMT positions. These positions are regular, full-time, and are represented by the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF).

SALARY (dependent on licensure level below):
Basic: $17.74 - $22.64
Advanced: $19.69 - $25.13
Intermediate: $21.51 - $27.47
Paramedic: $26.03 - $33.22
Schedule:
Single role positions currently work a rotating schedule of 48 hours one week, followed by 36 hours the next week, with overtime paid for any hours over 40 hours in a work week.
Additional Salary Information:
Effective July 1, 2024, this position will receive a cost-of-living adjustment (salary increase) of two percent (2.0%).

Performs emergency aid activities in accordance with department standing orders, including driving ambulances, administering life support (BLS/ILS/ALS) treatment within applicable scope as authorized in the Linn/Benton County Clinical Guidelines, and transports patients. Supports the Life Safety Division's programs through public education and community outreach; performs related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED/REVIEW OF WORK
The single-role EMT works under the guidance of duty battalion chief or lieutenant and under general supervision of a deputy chief.
The duties listed are intended only as illustrative examples of the various types of work that may be performed by individuals in this classification. Any of the following duties may be performed. These examples are not necessarily performed by all incumbents and do not include all specific essential functions and responsibilities the incumbent may be expected to perform.
  1. Responds to non-emergency and emergency medical responses; operates within the Incident Command System; and provides BLS/ILS/ALS level emergency medical care and transportation between medical facilities.
  2. Completes electronic medical documentation for each patient encounter in a complete, competent, and timely manner.
  3. Protects the privacy of all patient information in accordance with department privacy policies, procedures, and practices as required by federal and state law, and in accordance with general principles of professionalism as a healthcare provider.
  4. May access Protected Health Information (PHI) and other patient information only to the extent that it is necessary to complete job duties.
  5. Determines appropriate actions to take during emergency response activities and in performing program area activities or duties as assigned.
  6. Performs job duties in compliance with department operating procedures and city, county, state, and federal laws, and ordinances.
  7. Establishes, promotes, and maintains positive working relationships while promoting the department's mission, vision, and value statements.
  8. Maintains apparatus, equipment, and facilities to ensure safe, efficient, and effective operations.
  9. Performs housekeeping and minor repairs to department equipment, apparatus, facilities, and grounds.
  10. Operates radio and other communication equipment.
  11. Reports any concerns regarding department policies and procedures on patient privacy and any observed practices in violation of those policies to the designated Privacy Officer.
  12. Represents the City of Albany by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor. Regards everyone, internal and external, as a customer and deliver the best service possible in a respectful and patient manner.
  13. Serves as a member of various City committees as assigned.
  14. Assists other staff in the performance of their duties as assigned and provides training and orientation to newly assigned personnel.
  15. Maintains regular job attendance and adherence to working hours.
  16. Operates a motor vehicle safely and legally.
  17. Performs other related duties as required/assigned.

This is a non-supervisory position. Lead work/coordination of the work of others is not a typical function assigned to this position. Incumbents in this position will provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel.Education and Experience:
High school diploma or its equivalent and graduation from an accredited EMT program. One or more years of work experience as an EMT-Basic with a career or volunteer fire department or private EMS agency, or successful completion of a student or EMS internship with the Albany Fire Department is preferred. An associate degree in emergency medical technology or fire service is preferred. Any other equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Special Requirements:
  1. Must have a current state of Oregon EMT-Basic license or higher.
  2. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license.
  3. Must meet the City's physical qualifications and pass a background check, medical and psychological exams, and drug screen prior to appointment.
  4. Preference may be given for Spanish language bilingual skills.
  5. Use of tobacco products is prohibited subject to applicable agency policy and/or collective bargaining agreement.
  6. The individual shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of themselves or others.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of: principles, practices, and procedures of EMS; geography of the district and Ambulance Service Area (ASA); the operation and maintenance of the various types of apparatus and equipment used by the department.
Skill in: operation of listed tools and equipment used.
Ability to: learn the operation of EMS and other equipment; perform strenuous physical tasks under adverse environmental conditions; act effectively in emergency and stressful situations; follow verbal and written instructions; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; understand and carry out written and oral instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public, operate computers for data entry.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
In the performance of the job duties, the employee will work in outside day or night conditions, congested traffic, and unsafe road conditions. Employee may work near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places. Employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; vibration; risk of electrocution; and extreme heat or cold.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain EMS activities when noise levels may be loud. Must be able to work all shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed.Employment Type: Regular, Full-time
