Description
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
This position responds to call for basic and advanced life support Emergency Medical services, during day to day operations, and mass casualty and man-made/natural disasters; performs inter-facility transports including treatment to scope; provides EMS standby at events and incidents, provides non-Emergency Medical treatment according to Standing Orders; operates Ashland Fire & Rescue (AF&R) vehicles, specialized equipment; assists in routine maintenance, cleaning, and inspection of AF&R vehicles, equipment, facilities; and may be responsible for project work.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERICS:
This is a single position classification, where the incumbent has the ability to communicate in written and oral mediums, has knowledge of EMS Procedures and equipment, is even tempered and able to respond appropriately and professionally to varied, potentially stressful situations, has the ability to professionally represent AF&R to the public, other agencies and organizations, and has integrity and dedication with ability to adhere to moral and ethical principles with unwavering dedication to purpose.
Essential Job Functions
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Respond to medical emergency scenes and provide patient care functions including but not limited to: performing triage, gathering patient information, performing patient exams, formulating plans, rendering treatment consistent with care protocols, directing medical activities at multiple patient scenes, mass casualty incidents, or man-made/natural disasters.
  2. Provide EMS standby at events and incident, provide non-Emergency Medical treatment according to standing orders.
  3. Respond to non-emergency interfacility transport requests and provide continued patient care and treatment.
  4. Assist in the routine maintenance, cleaning, and inspection of Ashland Fire & Rescue's ambulances, equipment, and facilities.
  5. Respond appropriately and calmly to emergency situations and make good decisions based on sound judgement, appropriately directing on-scene resources to deliver high quality EMS care.
  6. Prepare reports documenting accidents scenes and patient care and gathering billing information in a complete and accurate manner, using correct English, grammar, spelling and mathematics.
  7. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, understand and follow oral and written instructions, and appropriately carry out orders.
  8. Work under direct and indirect supervision of a physician advisor.
  9. Provides fire station tours and information to visitors; assists the public with questions and concerns.
  10. Maintains accurate, legible and complete records and reports as assigned by supervisor.
  11. Participates in voluntary and mandatory staffing callbacks, and mandatory trainings.
  12. Meets requirements of the State of Oregon to obtain and/or maintain Oregon EMT certification as required.
  13. Practices only within the EMT-B, EMT-A or EMT-I scope of practice approved by the physician advisor; maintains a current Oregon EMT license.
  14. Maintain a high level of physical fitness.
  15. Maintains a clean, professional appearance while maintaining a courteous, professional, and ethical behavior while working cooperatively with other members of the healthcare system, co-workers, and the public.
  16. Attends and participates in drills and training.
  17. Other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Required Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Possession of a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
The applicant must meet Ashland Fire & Rescue uniform and appearance standards and will be provided official department clothing during the period of employment.
Training will be provided in addition to working with experienced team members.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
License: Possession of, or the ability to obtain and retain, an Oregon driver license within 30 days of employment.
Certification: ICS 100, 200, 700 and OSHA equivalent HazMat Emergency Responder within (12) twelve months of employment; Must possess State of Oregon certified EMT-B, EMT-A or EMT I license; Current CPR certification.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Associate Degree in Fire Protection Technology or Fire Science
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Work required shift(s), including weekends, holidays and overtime as requested.

  • Work cooperatively with others and deal tactfully with the public.
  • Handle high volume of emergency calls with tact and good judgement.
  • Read, write legibly, and comprehend directions and instructions in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Lift and carry heavy objects, as well as move and transport patients.
  • Safely and effectively operate an emergency vehicle under normal and emergency response.
  • Read maps and learn Ambulance Service Area (ASA) geography and street layout.
  • Perform competently under pressure in stressful situations.
  • Speak before groups and effectively present materials or information.

  • Aptitudes required for work of this nature are good physical stamina, endurance and body condition that would not be adversely affected by frequently having to walk, stand.

  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 200 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the member works primarily in the apparatus bays, vehicles, and outdoor settings in all weather conditions, including temperatures extremes, during day and night. Work is occasionally performed in emergency and stressful situations. Individuals are exposed to sirens and hazards associated with fires including smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, solvents, and oils. The member occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, radiation, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in the office settings, moderate during daily work routines, and loud at emergency scenes.
