General Statement of Duties
Are you ready to answer the call and serve your community as a Single Role EMT?
Eugene Springfield Fire's Emergency Medical Services Division is tasked with providing high quality patient care to the communities of Eugene and Springfield. Our ambulances are outfitted with the latest equipment in EMS. Come join our team!
The Single Role EMT functions in support of the lead medic on an ALS ambulance and is responsible for performing skilled basic life support medical care, including the pre-hospital care, assessment, preparation and transportation of sick and/or injured patients. The Single Role EMT performs all work consistent with the EMT-B/A certification level as specified by established State of Oregon Scope of Practice.
The Single Role EMT classification differs from the Basic Life Support Technician in that the Single Role EMT functions as part of the team assigned to an advanced life support response unit. The Schedule for Single Role EMT is a 48 hour work week consisting of primarily 24-hour shift assignments compared to the 36-hour work week for Limited Duration Basic Life Support Technicians work or the part-time temporary Basic Life Support Technician position.

Salary Range: $18.77 - $25.12 hourly. Earning Potential: $50,754.08 - $67,924.48 annually. Earning potential is based on a regularly scheduled 48-hour average workweek where all hours worked over 40 in a workweek are paid at 1.5 X the regular hourly rate. This position is paid on an hourly basis; the hourly pay range is $18.77 - $25.12. The annual earning potential listed is based on working 48 hours, on average, per workweek over the span of 52 weeks. The position is eligible for overtime opportunities above the regularly scheduled earning potential reported.

Examples of Duties Performed - Duties may include but are not limited to the following
  • Responds to emergency situations and performs medical assessment, treatment and transportation of sick or injured patients. Works within the established chain-of-command in the performance of duties; follows all orders, rules, policies, standard operation procedures (SOP's), medical protocols, safety practices; makes rapid decisions as to appropriate course of action within their scope of practice.
  • Performs initial and secondary patient assessments and administers basic life support measures within their scope of practice in support of an advanced life support technician.
  • Directs and documents treatment for all BLS patients.
  • Directs and performs patient lifting and carrying maneuvers without causing additional injury.
  • Directs and assists with regular inventories, checks and maintenance of assigned ambulances, EMS equipment, tools and supplies.
  • Completes various city, department and state reports detailing vehicle or personal injury accidents, patient care, and other incidents or events.
  • Operates and teaches the use of various pieces of medical equipment including suction units, cardiac monitor/defibrillators, stretchers, and other assigned medical instruments/supplies and devices according to department standards.
  • Safely operates emergency vehicles in varying conditions and situations according to department standards.
  • Performs various EMS services at special events, provide rehabilitation, wildland incidents, etc.
  • Complies with all requirements for training and re-certification as defined in the established policies and regulations of the Cities of Eugene and Springfield, State of Oregon and OSHA.
  • Supports, respects, and encourages diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Associates or two-year degree preferred.
Experience: One year of relevant, full-time EMT training/work or one year of related medical experience. This qualification is satisfied by completing an EMT internship and clinical rotations.
Licenses or Certificates:
  • Valid Oregon Driver's License (ODL) or ability to obtain by date of hire; must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City's standard. Oregon law requires that an out-of-state license holder must obtain a valid Oregon license (with appropriate endorsements) within 30 days of becoming domiciled in the state (ORS 803.355)
  • Possession of and ability to obtain and maintain a State of Oregon EMT Licensure by date of hire. National Registry EMT or a provisional license would not meet this requirement.
  • FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 training to be provided by ESF if certifications not already held.
  • Emergency Vehicle Operations Course training to be provided by ESF if certification not already held.

Supplemental Information
Selection Process: Applicants are screened based upon their relevant knowledge, abilities, skills, experience, and training. The selection process varies according to the position and can include such things as screening of supplemental questionnaires, written or skill tests, ability or fitness tests, interviews, and assessment processes. In addition, background investigations and records checks may be required. Applicants selected to continue in the process will be notified within two-three weeks after the posting deadline.
Candidates must pass a complete pre-employment physical examination prior to receiving a final offer of employment. The examination and drug test will be conducted by the City's contracted physician and paid for by the hiring department. Candidates who receive a positive drug test will be disqualified. Marijuana use is evaluated consistent with current state law regulations.
Hiring Process Timeline (dates are tentative and subject to change)
  • Application Screening: December - mid January. Applications will be reviewed to determine which candidates will be invited to the interview process. This includes an evaluation of the supplemental questions included in the application.
  • Interviews: Late January, 2024. The interview process may include job-simulation and/or physical ability practical(s), along with an interview designed to elicit an applicant's relevant skills and abilities for the job.
  • Background Investigations: Late January to early March, 2024
  • Psychological Testing & Physical Exams: March/ early April 2024
  • Hire Date: Early May, 2024

Bilingual Pay Benefit: Per the IAFF Contract, the City shall pay an employee equal to 5% of the base rate on base hours excluding overtime. To qualify for bilingual pay, the employee must have demonstrated fluency in the required language and successfully pass a fluency examination administered by the City's Employee Resource Center division.
