Job description

Easterseals South Florida (ESSF) has been serving families in South Florida for over 80 years. ESSF is a $15 million non-profit health and human services organization that provides exceptional services so that people living with autism, Alzheimer’s, and other disabilities can live, learn, work, and play in the community.

They provide exceptional services, education, and outreach for children ages birth to 22 years old, Head Start and Early Head Start programs, adult daycare and in-home respite for older adults living with Alzheimer’s and other memory disorders and their families.

Easterseals serves the individual, supports the family, and creates better opportunities for their clients to achieve lives of dignity, personal choice, and full acceptance and respect in the community.

Mission

Easter Seals of South Florida’s mission is to provide services that address equity and inclusion disparities for individuals with disabilities by enhancing education, advancing health, expanding employment, and elevating community.

We want every child in their Head Start, early education, and special education programs to reach their full potential and every adult living with Alzheimer’s or other memory disorder – and their caregivers – to live the fullest and most dignified life possible. Easterseals is responsive to the needs of each community – leading the way to 100% equity, inclusion, and access for people with disabilities and the greater community.

History

As America’s largest nonprofit health care organization, Easterseals is committed to the comprehensive health and wellness of the more than 1.5 million people it serves each year and is prepared to respond to the needs of the one in four Americans living with disability today with outcomes-based services for all disabilities throughout the lifespan.

Easterseals services include early intervention, inclusive childcare, medical rehabilitation and autism services for young children and their families; job training and coaching, employment placement and transportation services for adults with disabilities, including veterans; adult day services and employment opportunities for older adults in addition to a variety of additional services for people of all ages including mental health and recovery programs, assistive technology, camp and recreation, caregiving support including respite and much more

In the spring of 1934, the organization launched its first Easter "seals" campaign to raise money for its services. To show their support, donors placed the seals on envelopes and letters. Easterseals South Florida (ESSF) was founded in 1942 and was originally called the Crippled Children's Society. ESSF was the first to offer education to the children with disabilities at a time when they were not allowed in the public school system. Renting a church basement and hiring a teacher, a handful of students began attending classes. ESSF Board of Directors were instrumental in advocating the public schools in Miami. Since those humble beginnings, ESSF has expanded its mission to help people of all ages overcome or minimize the challenges of disabilities on activities of daily life.

Featured Programs

ESSF manages 11 sites with a program portfolio including:

  • Special Education
o The Wayne & Nicole Cypen School (including two child development centers, the elementary and middle school academy, and the culinary arts high school) provides expert and focused help for children with autism and other special needs so they can reach their fullest potential and make progress on their journey towards independence.
  • Adult Day Care
o Older adults and seniors with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) to spend their days in our centers with our caring staff while their caregivers work, so they can return to their families every evening rather than living in a nursing home.
  • Head Start
o Provides high-quality, early-childhood education to preschool children living in low-income communities. Promotes school readiness by enhancing children’s cognitive, social, and emotional development. Provides support to families in the areas of education, mental health, and social services. 100% of children received preventative health care afterschool programs at 6 Centers.
  • In-Home Respite
o Provides in-home assistance for elders too frail to leave their homes, which lightens the stressful and often detrimental burden shouldered by their caregivers so the family can continue living together under the same roof as they envisioned they would.
  • Military & Veterans Services
o Provides support services to military and veteran families caring for a loved one who is disabled or chronically ill. Offers systems of care with viable options to allow current reintegration efforts through the help of the AmeriCorps respite program.
