Job Description

Domestic Violence Services (DVS) provides a variety of comprehensive immediate and long-term support services to survivors of DOMESTIC VIOLENCE (dv) and their families. DVS provides oversight for the largest domestic shelter system in the country which provides safety and services for this vulnerable population. This network of more than 55 DOMESTIC VIOLENCE shelters provide temporary emergency housing, and supportive services to over 17,500 victims of DOMESTIC VIOLENCE and their children annually. DVS provides oversight and funding for the 24-hour DOMESTIC VIOLENCE hotline. DVS also administers the No Violence Again (NOVA) program located at the DHS intake center, and the Domestic Violence Liaison Unit, which provides DOMESTIC VIOLENCE counseling and intervention at Job Centers. DVS partners with a network of community-based organizations, that provide counseling, legal services, financial development services, and job readiness for DOMESTIC VIOLENCE survivors. In addition, DVS leads a nationally recognized DOMESTIC VIOLENCE primary prevention effort, the Teen Relationship Abuse Prevention Program (RAPP).
DVS is recruiting for three (3) COMMUNITY COORDINATORS to function as DOMESTIC VIOLENCE HOUSING SPECIALIST, who will:
Establish and maintain effective communication and develop resources which help in providing affordable housing for DV shelter clients by establishing active relationships with brokers and landlords and other services; provide needed information about programs and answers inquiries from general public and prospective providers; conduct presentations and trainings in order to educate the specific community based organizations, housing developers and any concerned parties on the various housing programs and the overall benefits of participating.
Meet with outreach partners, DV service providers, and clients to provide technical support for housing program initiatives; update brokers, landlords, and shelter providers on housing program information as needed by obtaining timely information from developers to document their compliance.
Coordinate with stakeholders to identify eligible clients; maintain a relationship with the HRA DVS Eligibility Services unit who are knowledgeable about the application process for various tenant-based rental subsidies in order to provide clients with the best options and opportunities for their individual applications for housing. Coordinate and set up walkthroughs.
Maintain accurate tracking of the available units and the status of pending client referrals, set aside units and match client eligibly criteria for these units. Set aside units are apartments which are identified but for which there is no family at the present that can be matched to the size and location of the apartment units that are matched are tracked pending viewing of the apartment and confirmation of safe location. Data collected includes the number of eligible NoVA clients, number of clients referred to specific Homeless Program Providers, number of families placed into permanent housing, number of families still seeking assistance in locating permanent housing placement, and those who are no longer seeking our assistance to locate permanent housing and why.
Liaise with sister agencies including DHS for DV survivor discharge planning to other housing options including DHS shelter and intake.
Prepare monthly statistical reports. This position includes field work. Utilize all databases and programs to achieve unit goals.
Work Location: 4 WTC 43rd floor
Hours/Schedule: 9-5 flex


Minimum Qualifications


1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

Knowledge of the real estate market / field.

Residency Requirement


New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
