Job description

Director ofOutreach Strategy and Production Management

American Veterans Center

Are you a history fanatic? Do you love aspirational stories of heroes – sung and unsung – from our past and present? And are you a movie & TV buff, looking to tell timeless stories in fresh ways to ever wider audiences while having the chance to work with A-list celebrities?

If so, you will find few opportunities as rewarding as this.

The American Veterans Center is where history meets multimedia and culture, producing major live events and Emmy-winning television specials along with mass-reaching digital content, all designed to preserve and spotlight America’s heroic legacy. Our brand is ‘history with a touch of Hollywood cool,’ and we are searching for a forward-thinking partner to take ownership of the very heart of our mission – cultivating relationships with the heroes whose stories we tell.

AVC is hiring the position of Director ofOutreach Strategy and Production Management to oversee outreach, integration, and relationship development among all participants in AVC’s programming. We are seeking a motivated individual with superior communication and organization skills, and a demonstrated passion for history and storytelling, to help take our brand, content, and reputation to new levels.

Director ofOutreach Strategy and Production Managementresponsibilities include:

Primary:

- Identify, research, engage and cultivate relationships with the veterans, history-makers, heroes, and select celebrities participating in AVC’s major programs, including:

o American Valor: A Salute to Our Heroes – An Emmy-winning Veterans Day television special honoring heroes and legends of the last 80 years of history. https://vimeo.com/883345969

o The National Memorial Day Parade – The largest Memorial Day event in the country, also televised nationwide. https://vimeo.com/832482178/cc2f2c2a0b

o AVC Digital Content – Including the AVC’s YouTube Channel, comprised of first-person storytelling with more than 150 million views. https://www.youtube.com/avcvideos

o The AVC’s Annual Veterans Conference – Held in conjunction with American Valor, the event draws together heroes and legends with hundreds of cadets & midshipmen from each of the military service academies & ROTC programs from across the country.

- Building trust and investment in the organization among these participants, cultivating them into supporters and spokesmen.

- Managing logistics surrounding participation, both for live events and remote production shoots, from travel/hotel to production coordination (you will be supported by a professional logistics team to handle the heavy lifting at major events).

- Identifying institutional partners and leads for new content and content collection, including museums, like-minded organizations, authors and advocates.

Secondary:

- Coordinate participation & attendance from U.S. military academy/ROTC students at the American Valor/AVC Conference weekend of events.

- Manage invitations to and relationships with senior Department of Defense representatives surrounding the AVC’s major events.

- Targeted logistics support surrounding major events.

This position will be approximately 65% outreach/relationship development, 35% logistics execution (higher in advance of major events.)

Director ofOutreach Strategy and Production Managementrequirements:

- A demonstrated interest and passion for history, culture, content creation, and storytelling.

- Superior interpersonal skills – you must like people, and people must like you. Your primary job is to earn trust and respect.

- High EQ, and must be genuine in your appreciation of these stories and people – they are living gold, and must be treated as such. You’ll encounter all personalities, from the everyday hero to senior military leadership to celebrity publicists. You’ll need to be able to manage varying personalities.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

- Deadline-driven, and highly self-motivated. Willingness to go a bit above and beyond in advance of major events/shows, most notably in advance of Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

- Highly collaborative and open-minded in the creation process. We are a small team, and must be of one mind.

- Positive attitude and sense of humor, with the ability to have fun while telling incredible stories.

- Proficiency and appreciation of digital content and social media, and the ability to spot stories that are likely to perform well with an audience.

- Enthusiasm for pop culture of all kinds! Movies, television, music – all eras, all genres. We’re storytellers, and the best storytellers are enthusiastic about all kinds of stories.

- Bachelor’s Degree with 4+ years of professional experience. Relevant experience includes public relations, talent booking, television/film production, or similar experience of engaging and building relationships across a wide array of people.

- Location in the Washington, DC area is preferred, but not required. This is a unique position, so the right fit supersedes location.

As television and digital content has become the major channel through which we spotlight these stories, this position will play a vital role in the organization’s identity, growth, and success. It marks a fantastic opportunity for the right, motivated candidate to make a mark on history while serving as the front-line in bringing these heroes and legends to the table.

In short, every story you see in AVC’s content will originate through you. It’s among the most rewarding experiences you can ask for.

To apply, submit your resume, cover letter with your best pitch, relevant writing samples, and any supporting materials.
