In carrying out its mission, ISA:
- Collects, analyzes, interprets, models, and reports information about NC State
- Manages institutional strategic planning, including implementation planning and metrics for the university strategic plan
- Provides leadership, execution, coordination, and operational support in governance and strategy with respect to the university's academic and administrative data
- Administers, analyzes, supports, and oversees institutional surveys
- Supports, administers, and maintains applicable data structures, applications, and systems
The Director will provide effective leadership to the Data Governance team in ISA and work collaboratively with the ISA leadership team, campus partners, and stakeholders to advance continuous improvement of processes and outcomes of Data Governance.
The Director will join the Institutional Strategy and Analysis team and report to the Assistant Vice Provost, Institutional Analytics and Data Governance.
- Collaborate and consult with ISA leadership and campus partners on the development and execution of institutional Data Governance initiatives, including strategies, policies, procedures, standards, and projects.
- Lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of an enterprise data catalog containing functional and technical definitions of institutional data elements and terminology, documentation of NC State's analytical reports and dashboards, and information about institutional data sources.
- Improve and expand institutional data quality efforts, including issue intake, logging, tracking, investigation, resolution, and reporting, in collaboration and in conjunction with other ISA teams, data stewards, campus partners, and stakeholders.
- Expand and promote institutional data literacy efforts, including end-user and analyst/developer training, demonstrations, user documentation and support, and communication.
- Work with ISA leadership to build collaborative networks across campus inclusive of data stewards, stakeholders and campus leaders.
- Improve the effectiveness of the Data Governance function of ISA through continuous evaluation and assessment of processes and outcomes.
- Provide effective leadership and supervision to the Data Governance team (e.g., staff, graduate students and/or temporary employees) allocating tasks in an equitable manner that promotes team building and continued enhancement of Data Governance expertise and services.
- Work in a dynamic environment and be responsive to changing goals, priorities, and university needs as articulated in other duties as assigned.
- Understanding of, and ability to convey to others, the value of institutional data and Data Governance.
- Knowledge of the complete data lifecycle.
- Demonstrated understanding of how data are used in organizational decision-making, planning, evaluation, and accountability.
- Familiarity with higher education or government, or other complex service/regulatory experience.
- Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn NC State's organizational and data environment (Data Governance, academic structure and campus infrastructure, protocols, policies and procedures).
- Ability to maintain confidentiality with highly sensitive or controversial issues.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to resolve questions or conflicts consistent with existing Data Governance standards, principles of collaboration and institutional effectiveness are essential.
- Ability to provide ethical leadership characterized by good judgment, professionalism, tact, diplomacy, discretion and a focus on team work.
- Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with diverse constituencies and across organizational boundaries.
- Experience managing complex projects.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and strict deadlines while maintaining a high degree of accuracy.
- Experience creating and/or executing Data Governance processes and procedures at the enterprise level.
- Experience with enterprise data catalog concepts, tools, and operations.
- Supervisory experience.
