About The Position
The Business Development (BD) Director is one of the organization’s key leaders in visioning and executing Geneva’s business and revenue growth objectives. The BD Director leads the development and implementation of the organization’s Business Development strategy, focused primarily on the Federal sector. The BD Director ensures success in business capture, proposal development, and resource management activities to generate increased revenue for the organization. Key responsibilities of this position also include strengthening Geneva's strategic position in research and development (R&D) funding initiatives and ensuring Geneva stays ahead of changes in the funding landscape. This position supports the development and messaging of Geneva’s value proposition and serves as a spokesperson for the organization. The BD Director develops and strengthens strategic partnerships with key stakeholder groups including researchers, academic collaborators, industry partners, government sponsors, and other key customer groups. The BD Director serves on the Leadership Team and works collaboratively with senior leadership.
This is a hybrid remote position in which the employee will go into the Corporate office in Bethesda, MD.
Salary Range
$165,000 - $185,000. Salaries are determined based on several factors including external market data, internal equity, and the candidate’s related knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
Management Responsibilities
- Lead staffing, hiring, and performance review processes for direct reports with input on same for entire BD team
- Conduct counseling, corrective action, up to and including termination, in collaboration with People Operations
- Manage BD team to ensure optimal performance
- Ensure BD team works collaboratively with other teams, including developing, revising, and implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and the organization’s policies
- Oversee general administrative needs such as timesheet approval, new hire paperwork, continuing education/training plans
- Ensure team complies with organizational policies, procedures, and SOPs
- Plan and facilitate individual and team meetings
- Serve as an active member of the Leadership Team
- Serve on Board Advocacy Committee and support activities related to strategic growth priorities
Responsibilities
- In collaboration with senior leadership, develop growth strategies that align with organizational strategic initiatives and business goals
- Develop and implement short- and long-term Business Development strategies for the organization, to include market analysis and business intelligence gathering, the development of a robust Business Development pipeline, leadership of feasibility and bid/no bid decision-making, and the execution of winning proposal strategies, win themes, pricing strategies, and capture management plans
- Create and implement strategies for developing key partnerships and initiatives around Federal research priorities, mobilizing necessary internal and external resources to ensure partnerships are effectively executed and partners’ needs are fully met
- Conduct milestone reviews and internal evaluations of the technical, management, past performance, and overall proposal approaches; develop, track, and report on key performance indicators.
- Lead the effort to document and standardize the proposal practices utilizing policies, standard operating procedures, checklists, and other tools to develop and maintain high quality and winning proposal efforts
- Direct the development and use of tools, templates, and processes to improve win probability and proposal quality
- Ensure the submission of high-quality proposals in line with Geneva's brand
- Represent Geneva at client meetings, conferences, industry days, webinars, teaming meetings, and research-driven events, resulting in qualified leads and new business
- Maintain a thorough knowledge of Geneva’s programs, capabilities, and client relationships
- Utilize HubSpot and Deltek GovWin to document all Business Development activities
- Elevate Geneva’s brand profile and positioning among external partners, networks, and stakeholders by demonstrating how Geneva adds value
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with research staff, understanding how key technical capabilities align with client needs
- Monitor and respond to Contractor Performance Assessment Reporting System (CPARS) and client satisfaction findings
Qualifications
This position demands a strategic mindset and a successful record of accomplishment of developing leads and winning contracts, grants, and cooperative agreements with the DoD (Department of Defense), DHHS, GSA, other federal agencies, and industry.
- Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in business administration or similar field preferred, doctoral degree a plus
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in strategic business growth and development
- Extensive experience in building strategic partnerships that have translated to increased revenue
- Proven ability to negotiate and work with high level executives and government officials
- Demonstrated success in the development of strategic initiatives for a nonprofit, government entity or similar organization
- Solid understanding of federal government contract vehicles
- Understanding of federal government procurement, solicitation processes, and compliant proposal production
- Experience managing multiple simultaneous capture and proposal efforts, to include managing the efforts of a capture and proposal team by planning resource assignments, performing quality assurance, and installing process, tools, and templates for team use
- Proven experience building programs of research to include the development and successful execution of growth plans, research proposals, and increasing win rates to grow research portfolios
- Demonstrated drive to solve problems in a team environment and lead with high energy and a positive attitude
- Experience working on a leadership team implementing organizational strategy
- Must be highly flexible to support multiple, simultaneous, fast-turn proposal responses
- Strong understanding of customer base, market dynamics, corporate culture, and sponsor requirements
- Demonstrated experience in data driven decision-making based on gathering data and synthesizing it into meaningful and relevant analyses of industry, client base, and competition
- Able to represent organization through the effective demonstration of core values – prioritizing superior customer service, collaborative teamwork, and exceptional quality as pillars for success
- Able to exercise independent judgment in fast-paced, high-pressured environment with strict deadlines and to manage multiple projects
