Purpose of Position
To provide personal assistance services to the Consumer. Assist the Consumer in attaining and maintaining maximum functional independence. Support and promote the rights of Consumers and function as a participant of the Interdisciplinary Team. This position may also require you to transport consumers in agency vehicles.
Principal Responsibilities: Daily
- Assist with personal care: dressing, bathing, tooth brushing, toileting, incontinent care, etc.
- Documentation: daily contact notes, incident reports, individual program plans, medication sheets, care, shaving, hair washing, nail care, skin care, check weight, and vital signs, medication monitoring, behavior modifications, doctor’s visits, and body checks.
- Recreation: monitoring Consumers while participating in activities, documentation of participation of activities, and recreational planning.
- Dietary: feeding and eating training, food preparation, menu preparation training. Depending upon the ability of the Consumer, food preparation and feeding assistance may be necessary.
- Transporting consumers as directed by the residential supervisor.
- Housekeeping: Training and monitoring in the areas of mopping, sweeping, dusting, laundry (washing, sorting, drying, and folding), vacuuming, making beds, and cleaning the appliances, bathrooms, kitchens. Depending upon the ability of the Consumer, housekeeping tasks may be necessary.
- Training in independence, citizenship, rights, banking, sex education, vocational, and any other activities of daily living.
- Adherence to Universal Precautions and Blood borne Pathogen Standards while working with the Consumers.
- Communicate with Consumers, families, and supervisors in writing, manually, and verbally.
- Conduct all work tasks with constant attention to safety for self and others.
- Reporting of hazardous and needed repairs on equipment and building to your supervisor immediately.
- Other duties as needed.
Position Qualifications
Education and experience: High school diploma or GED. Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred.
Skills and abilities:
- Ability to use good body mechanics in controlling erratic behavior and participating in physical activities with the Consumer as part of their program.
- Emotionally secure and able to handle stressful situations.
- Ability to work with others for integrated programming.
- Hearing and vision correctable to normal ranges for communication and interaction with the consumers and their families, reading English and responding to emergencies.
- Ability to work alongside individuals with developmental disabilities.
- Must be reliable in attendance and timeliness to work schedules.
- Communication skills, ability to talk clearly and understand English.
- Mobile with quick response time to emergencies.
- Knowledge of personal hygiene and personal care.
- Knowledge of personal needs of individuals with developmental disabilities.
- Care giving/nurturing skills, compassion, patience for establishing relationships with Consumer and their family.
- Good organizational skills.
- Must follow safety instructions.
Licensure/Certification:
- Must maintain current CPR certification.
- Must maintain SAMA certification.
- As Required:
- Defensive Driving course must be completed within thirty (30) days of employment and annually thereafter.
- Must maintain current Texas driver’s license.
