Job description

This is a contracted position and is located in the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office Detention Division and is responsible for providing professional medical services to inmates within the Detention Center. Ensures inmates receive care in accordance with established federal and state regulations. This position is supervised by the Detention Center Clinic Director and works with a staff of medical professionals.
Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Provide professional medical services within the Gallatin County Detention Center.
  • Ensure inmates receive care in accordance with established federal, state and local policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and guidelines and is consistent with professional Correctional Healthcare standards, community standards, and Montana Jail Standards.
  • Provide professional medical care and medication management to inmates based on their specific needs.
  • Be available "on call" by phone (provided by Gallatin County) during clinic hours, which includes weekends and holidays, to supports clinic needs. Phone communication methods include: text message, phone calls, or email unless time off is approved by Employee's supervisor in accordance with County policy.
  • Provide direct patient care, in the Detention Center Medical clinic a minimum of 12 hours per week, 52 weeks per calendar year, with the exception of approved time off.
  • Employee may be required to be on site for special circumstances in addition to the minimum hours set forth in this subsection for such reasons as, but not limited to, infectious disease outbreaks, disasters, and legal obligations. At times, employees may need to be available via conference call to participate in projects or meetings.
  • Follow safety and security protocols when working in the Detention Center.
  • Collaborate with clinic staff to provide continuity of care to inmates. The employee will collaborate directly with community-based and other health professionals when care is referred to community providers, specialists, hospitals, emergency rooms, and other medical facilities.
  • Communicate with inmates, DC staff, clinic staff, community medical professionals, and family members in a professional, kind, helpful manner.
  • See inmates as scheduled by clinic staff and therapists.
  • Review and sign all assigned documents in the electronic health records system. A County issued laptop will be provided.
  • Document all patient care in the electronic health records system.
  • Develop care plans, schedule clinic follow-ups, and does discharge planning when clinically indicated.
  • Maintain professional licensing as required by federal and state law and regulation to deliver the services of a medical provider at the Detention Center.

This work requires knowledge of the principles and practices, theories, laws and authorities of professional nursing and medicine that includes: medical terminology, diagnostic and preventative techniques; pharmacology; communicable disease follow up and interventions; immunizations; operation and maintenance of equipment used in patient care; community resources; health care records management; interpersonal relations; health education and counseling; Detention Center policy and procedures; inmate rights; common safety hazards and precautions; and the ability to apply knowledge; maintain accurate medical charts and records; handle sensitive and confidential information; communicate effectively both in writing and verbally; react well in emergency situations; appropriately and professionally engages nursing staff in work; and establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Collaborates with professionals in corrections field, to include inhouse staff. This position is required to make independent determinations that could have significant ramifications and must possess excellent verbal and written skills. Position requires use of a variety of medical equipment and tools.

A Nurse Practitioner- The required knowledge and skills that are generally acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a Master's Degree in Nursing from an accredited School of Professional Nursing, Certification as a FNP, and two (2) years of job related work experience. Prescriptive authority and licensure granted by Montana State Board of Nursing. Mental Health experience preferred.

Physician Assistant -A Physician's Assistant must be licensed by the Montana Board of Medical Examiners and meet the educational requirements set by Montana laws or in administrative rules. A Physician Assistant must have a Supervision Agreement and a Duties and Delegation Agreement in place with the supervising physician prior to practice. The Supervision Agreement must be on file with the Board prior to practice. Mental Health experience preferred.

The medical health benefits premium is covered for full-time employees. The County contribution is pro-rated on hours paid for part-time employees. Medical deductible is $400 for an individual and $1,000 for a family.
Paid Parental Leave (PPL)- In recognition of the importance of bonding and care of a newborn child or a child placed for adoption, Gallatin County provides 240 hours of PPL to eligible full-time employees. The hours are pro-rated for part-time employees.

Licenses and Certifications: Applicants for this position must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state of Montana, provide own transportation to conduct out of office job duties (mileage reimbursement provided under the County policy), and to be insurable under the County's liability policies.
