Position Title: Detention Center Registered Nurse - RN

Organization: Lewis and Clark County, Sheriff’s Office

Pay Rate: $31.12 to $32.96 per hour

Position Type/Status: Permanent, Full-time, Non-Exempt, LCCSEA

Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office is hiring a permanent fulltime Registered Nurse to work in the Detention Center.

Under direction of the Detention Center Sergeant this position provides clinical services to the incarcerated population and health care provider support at the Lewis and Clark County Detention Center.

Position is open until filled and applications will be reviewed weekly.

The Lewis & Clark County Sheriff's Office is the chief law enforcement agency in Lewis & Clark County, Montana. The Sheriff's Office provides general law enforcement, detention functions, rural fire support and search and rescue operations for the citizens of Lewis & Clark County in a service area of over two million acres. Duties

  • Provides direct patient care to the incarcerated population and health care provider support;
  • Prepares patients for examination;
  • Conducts and documents initial health interview and all patient encounters;
  • Administers kite program, obtains medical records from outside the facility and assists clinic providers with diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures;
  • Documents all activities with the incarcerated population thoroughly;
  • Administers injections and dispenses medications;
  • Prepares and cleans equipment, exam, and treatment room, performs quality controls on lab equipment and documents results and performs CLIA waived laboratory procedures;
  • Performs routine laboratory procedures including venipuncture, to include evidence collection, namely blood for DUI investigations;
  • Maintains clinical records, clinical and progress notes, and other patient information;
  • Provides information to patients and authorized Detention Center staff regarding medications, treatment instructions, lab and/or x-ray reports, etc.;
  • Perform Intake Assessments on new inmates;
  • Provides health counseling and education materials regarding preventive health and lifestyle modifications;
  • Responds to inquiries from patients, pharmacies, and providers;
  • Maintains inventory of medical and office supplies, drugs and equipment and maintains patient files, records, clinical and progress notes, and other patient information;
  • Sets up clinic appointments and assists with scheduling patient diagnostic tests, treatments, and hospital admissions;
  • Arranges transport (in conjunction with the Transport Officers) for appointments that occur outside of the Detention Center;
  • May perform receptionist and other clerical duties;
  • Provides billing information to Jail Accounting Technician;
  • Respond to and treat emergency medical issues;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Professional ethics, standards, practices, and responsibilities;
  • HIPAA and medical records confidentiality requirements;
  • Infection control measures and practices;
  • Electronic medical records, including protocols, policies, and procedures;
  • Basic understanding of Jail Operations including safety and security of facility, officers, inmates, and oneself.

Qualifications

The knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position are typically acquired through completion of an accredited nursing program and one (1) year medical office, hospital, or clinic experience. Current Registered Nurse licensure in Montana and CPR certification required. Detention center nursing experience preferred, but not necessary.

Physical Demands

Duties are generally performed in a clinic setting where hazards and discomforts are controlled and modifiable. This position requires the ability to bend at the waist, stand, kneel, reach over the head, talk, hear, and see. Must be able to move or lift documents and materials weighing up to 30 pounds. Position requires knowledge and use of typical office equipment including telephone and personal computer plus medical equipment and instruments. Position requires frequent contact with fellow employees, incarcerated population, and citizens. Position may require travel to other sites for work assignments, meetings, or training.

Special Requirements

  • Must pass a background check;
  • Must be currently registered as an RN in the state of Montana;
  • Work schedule is 12-hour day shifts and must be available to work weekends.
