Position Number:48RE84
Position Type:Temporary
Essential Job Duties:CounselorSalaryAnticipated Hiring Range $575 – $1250. Varies depending on camp and type of position worked. Please refer to special instructions for details.
Primary Purpose of PositionWhile all Design Camp staff have a strong impact on the lives of our pre-college students, and potential future designers, counselors have the unique opportunity to inspire students by working with them around the clock. They will work with students in a variety of scenarios and on different projects, as well as help them to make connections between their personal experiences and the path towards becoming a designer.
Counselors are responsible for supervising their group of students at all times, and act as a mentor and leader during studio activities, team outings and presentations. In addition to being a mentor to the students, counselors also work with instructors and Teaching Assistants to help facilitate learning during each studio project. Counselors must take an active role in the studio environment by having a good understanding of the projects that students are working on and be able to provide feedback throughout the process.
During each week of camp, counselors are required to present a project of their own that they have completed during their time as an NC State College of Design student. Not only are counselors a mentor to pre-college students who are interested in design, they are also representing the College of Design and their studio discipline.
Before campers arrive and after they leave, counselors work with fellow Design Camp staff to clean up and prepare camp facilities. Counselors are also responsible for leading campers during group activities.
Counselors must maintain a positive, professional, and encouraging mentor relationship with campers at all times.
Residential Design Camp counselors are expected to stay on campus in a residence hall and be available 24/7 during the week of camp and be responsible for camper supervision at all times.
Teaching AssistantSalaryAnticipated Hiring Range $600 – $750. Varies depending on camp and type of position worked. Please refer to special instructions for details.
Primary Purpose of Position Teaching Assistants (TA’s) are assigned to a specific studio and assist camp instructors with studio instruction, project critiques, classroom management, and help make transitions between studio projects as smooth as possible.
TA’s also assist with studio prep in the weeks leading up to the camp week and keep tabs on project supplies during the week of camp. TAs are required to be available to complete 10 hours of prep work the week directly before each camp, as well as participate fully on Prep Days. Prep work hours are set by instructors and approved by the Coordinator of Pre-College Programs. Prep hours should not exceed 10 hours per camp week, which is factored into the lump sum compensation, and may be concentrated in the week preceding the first camp if the TA is working multiple weeks.
TA’s work directly with campers, helping them learn and practice using design skills, techniques and ways of thinking relevant to the project or focus of the project.
TA’ing is a great opportunity for anyone interested in or curious about teaching.
