POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Data Visualization Designer reports to the Director of Creative and Production and will translate complex datasets into visual stories for the agency. You will support data analyst teams by providing high-quality design and best practices of Data Visualizations agency wide. The role will also partner with the content owners in the Office of School Safety and Security along with other offices across the agency to understand high priority issue and messaging to produce user-centered communications. You will work closely with the Director of Creative and Production to create engaging and interactive Data Visualizations that effectively communicate the research findings and tell a compelling visual narrative while ensuring accessibility for diverse users. The Data Visualization Designer also designs and creates various types of print and digital collateral to support the Communications Division and other agency offices to help maximize stakeholder understanding and engagement of the agency Strategic Plan. The Data Visualization Designer works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.

Flexible work location within the state of Texas may be considered for qualified candidates.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Data Visualization Design (70%)
Support the Commissioner of Education, data analysts, researchers, and other stakeholders to find the relevant data stories they want to translate and lead the design of the Data Visualizations into communications materials
Translate complex datasets into visual stories; specific skill with PowerPoint 
Create assets for digital platforms (website, social media, email, etc.), such as infographics, charts, animated gifs, and PowerPoint slides
Other Graphic Design Tasks (30%)
Support the design, layout, and illustration of communication materials for print and digital platforms for the Office of School Safety and Security
Support the Office of School Safety with web content updates and internal communications coordination

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in communication design, fine arts, graphic design, visual arts, or a related field
Experience: At least [5] years of experience designing Data Visualizations, graphic design, communications, or marketing. Experience coaching data analysts through the design process to surface data stories.
Substitutions: Each additional year of related experience above the required minimum may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS: 
Share the belief that all Texas students can achieve at high levels and are able to succeed in college, career, or the military
Expertise with chart-making and other Data Visualization techniques 
High level of proficiency using design software, i.e., Adobe Creative Cloud applications, specifically, InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office software, specifically PowerPoint and Sharepoint sites
Knowledge of Microsoft Power BI or Tableau
Experience implementing accessibility and disability standards best practices in Data Visualizations
Comfort with analyzing data sets to find the best visual solution
Ability to work with scientific and/or legal data and distill the 'big picture'
Thorough knowledge of visual design principles, including photography, typography, iconography, color theory
Familiarity with digital asset management systems
Experience with branding and style guidelines
Ability to work cross-functionally and on teams; possesses strong communication and presentation skills
Ability to multitask while being extremely organized, productive, timely and reliable
