The Role

The Cost Engineer is responsible for creating, analyzing, and validating material costs and targets for SDV components. Working in the PPCO – Advanced Vehicle Technology Cost team, this engineer will generate detailed cost estimates covering vehicle material costs, engineering design, development efforts, and production tooling. Collaboration with internal cross-functional peers is crucial, maintaining strong ties with the product engineering team, purchasing and supply chain team, vehicle program team, and global joint venture partners.

This role requires independent judgment, initiative, creativity, and managing multiple estimates, specifically focusing on identifying cost improvement opportunities through engineering design and supplier negotiations. The emphasis is on assessing the near-term state of software-Defined Vehicles to pinpoint industry best practices for cost improvement. Additionally, the engineer will explore engineering developments against emerging trends for digital revenue growth. This role provides exposure to the next generation of automotive technology, working alongside leading-edge automotive experts.

What You'll Do

  • Analyze, organize, and understand large amounts of data.

  • Develop cost models using ground up analysis for components within the SDV electrical architecture.

  • Act as a partner with the internal GPSC purchasing team, providing a fair yet competitive component cost for GM.

  • Apply manufacturing process knowledge and bill of material understanding to ensure that all applicable costs are fairly captured in cost models.

  • Collaborate with cross functional peers to effectively communicate cost estimate as well as key assumptions used in the cost model. Collaborate with the purchasing team to enable fact-based negotiations with suppliers. 

  • Travel to supplier facilities as required to grow manufacturing process knowledge for enhanced costing collaboration and support of the specific engineering / purchasing team.

Additional Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • At least 3 years relevant experience in automotive cost estimating, manufacturing, product design / engineering, or purchasing.

  • BSE, BS, or MS

  • Experience in financially evaluating technical concepts with a comprehensive understanding of electrical production processes.

  • Analyzing and quantifying SDV industry trends encompassing past, present, and near/long term future.

  • Able to condense and communicate a large amount of cost data efficiently to the broader GM team. Proficient in using Microsoft Office and MS Excel; ability to use/learn GMCO$T (internal GM cost estimating software).

  • Proficient in using data-driven analysis to identify solutions and set next steps for assigned projects.

  • Manufacturing and or launch experience in an automotive setting (OEM, tier 1 or tier 2 environment) (preferred)

  • Understanding expected manufacturing cost factors like labor, burden, and material, as well as commercial items such as SG&A and profit (preferred).

  • High agility to thrive in a dynamic and rapid-paced environment. Passionate about understanding Emerging Technologies and their key cost drivers.

  • A Graduate degree in Business Administration (MBA), Technical Management, or Engineering.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and assignments with a high degree of autonomy and complexity.

  • Experience with SDV manufacturing processes, technologies, and principles. 

  • Ability to drive results and provide cost guidance in an ambiguous environment.

  • Ability to lead change, resolve conflicts, and influence without direct authority.
