Overview
The New York Public Library (NYPL) is seeking a highly motivated and people-focused individual with outstanding communication, organizational and planning skills to fill the new position of Community Outreach and Engagement Coordinator. This is a hands-on role responsible for coordinating the library's Community Outreach and Engagement at a wide range of year-round community events, festivals and street fairs, and in public spaces such as parks, community gardens and markets.
This role is primarily responsible for coordinating the library's in person Community Outreach and Engagement to support the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), funded by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The role will supervise the Community Outreach Impact Associates, a small team of hourly Community Outreach staff, and help to ensure that the goals of the funded FCC-ACP outreach program are met.
The Community Outreach Impact Team will work to support awareness of the Affordable Connectivity Program in the Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island. The team is an integral part of NYPL's initiative to ensure underserved communities are aware of the benefits of the Affordable Connectivity Program and are connected with the library.
This is a grant-funded position, funded through June 2025.
We are looking for someone we can count on to:
Own:
- Supervision of the Community Impact Outreach team.
- Impactful Community Outreach to support the goals of the Affordable Connectivity Program and NYPL.
- Clear communication about the ACP program and an enthusiasm for connecting with individuals in diverse communities.
Teach:
- Individuals about the ACP, its benefits and how to register/apply.
Learn:
- About NYPL's network of branches and supporting outreach.
- About key communities supported by NYPL branches.
Improve:
- Outreach planning to ensure that staff and resources are matched to meet people where they are in ways that are effective and impactful.
Some expectations for this role are that within:
1 month, this person will:
- Be familiar with the ACP program and NYPL's programs, services and outreach goals.
- Meet with key internal stakeholders.
3 months, this person will:
- Train, support and supervise a small team of hourly Community Outreach Impact staff.
- Establish a system for monitoring and tracking Community Outreach opportunities.
- Develop a Community Outreach schedule with key community events and ongoing outreach.
6 months and beyond, this person will:
- Have a well-developed process for planning and scheduling outreach at key community events.
- Provide monthly impact reports on ACP and NYPL Community Outreach activities.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate and plan NYPL's in person outreach at a wide range of year-round community events and festivals in the Bronx, Staten Island and Manhattan, ensuring that each event is adequately staffed and resourced, including language support as needed.
- Supervise the Community Outreach Impact Team, manage schedules and provide training and support.
- Plan and coordinate Community Outreach at NYPL library locations, community organizations and in public settings such as shopping malls and recreation centers.
- Collaborate with the Library's branch, programming and outreach staff, volunteers and community partners to develop and schedule outreach activities that engage target communities.
- Provide administrative support for ACP and NYPL Community Outreach initiatives; monitor, track data and provide impact reports on key events and monthly activities.
- Maintain stakeholder contact information and help build new community partnerships that encourage sustainable and innovative local programming while contributing to programming priorities and helping to connect target communities with NYPL services.
- Collaborate with partners across NYPL including the central programming and outreach teams, branch staff and central services teams including BookOps, Communication and Facilities.
- Perform related duties and work on special projects as required.
Required Education, Experience & Skills
Required Education & Certifications
- Bachelor's Degree
- 1-3 years relevant work experience
- Fluent in conversational, reading and writing skills in a non-English language eg. Spanish, Chinese, Bengali, French.

- Proven track record working with diverse communities and people from underserved neighborhoods.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills including ability to produce quality documents, reports and communications in a variety of formats for both internal and external audiences, and the ability to present verbal informational confidently to a range of audiences
- Digitally literate and able to work and learn easily using technology.
- Demonstrated ability to work well in a team atmosphere and independently under minimal supervision.
- Excellent detail management and organization skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to principles of diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Flexibility and willingness to travel frequently within the NYC Metro area.
