The Center for Community Engagement & Service connects the American University community to non-profits and volunteer opportunities in the DMV.
As the Program Assistant for community-based learning, you would be overseeing our program that connects the classroom to the non-profit world. You'll be collaborating with professors, students, and our non-profit partners to oversee this program that intersects academia and student involvement.
Summary/Objective
The Center for Community Engagement & Service (CCES), is seeking one (1) graduate student to fill the "Community-Based Learning Program Assistant" position.
CCES is AU's hub for community outreach, volunteering and service-learning opportunities in Washington, DC. Your role supports the Community-Based Learning Programs by advancing
"service-learning" programs, which are experiential Learning Programs that take what students learn in the classroom and connect them to hands-on work in nonprofits across the DMV.
Essential Functions
- Organize nonprofit networking events & academic reflection. Track progress and support students of the Community Service-Learning Program (CSLP) and CB courses.
- Manage 3-4 undergraduate student workers as CSLP Peer Mentors.
- Work closely with faculty, nonprofits, and students/clubs to facilitate CBL programs at AU.
- Use GivePulse, AU's volunteer management software, to connect nonprofit opportunities with student interests and develop student leaders.
- Grow CBL trajectory through strategic planning, program advertisement, and participant recruitment each semester.
Work Environment
- The position is hybrid, so you will be working partially in the office and partially from home.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
- The position is roughly 15-18 hours/week.
Salary Range
- Graduate assistants at American University are paid $18.00/hour.
- You are paid on a bi-weekly schedule.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
• Proactive and growth-oriented mindset (enjoys building and strategizing).
• Strong with technology: Canva/adobe (graphic design), Asana (project management), Sharepoint (file management), Microsoft Suite, Canvas, Excel/Qualtrics (data management), AI tools, etc.
• Outstanding communication, organizational, leadership, and teamwork skills.
• Commitment to social justice issues, particularly with a JEDI (justice, equity, diversity, inclusion) framework.
• Service-Learning experience and/or prior experience with nonprofits preferred.
