Job description

Communications Strategist

The Center for Victims of Torture is hiring a Communications Strategist who will serve as project manager and writer in developing message strategy, communications plans, content strategy, digital campaigns, website, blog and social media content and promotions to increase visibility, cultivate new online audiences, and meet engagement or other goals.

  • Position is open to candidates who reside in and are eligible to work in the US

Organization:

The Center for Victims of Torture works toward a future in which torture ceases to exist and its victims have hope for a new life. We are an international nonprofit dedicated to healing survivors of torture. We offer rehabilitation services to those who have been tortured, train partners around the world who can prevent and treat torture, and advocate for human rights and an end to torture. We are headquartered in Minnesota, and we have US offices in Georgia and DC, as well as offices in Africa and the Middle East.

Responsibilities:

  • Communications and Messaging Strategy: In partnership with colleagues, develop messaging, content strategy and campaigns for use on website and digital platforms. Work with program, policy and development teams to create content that will meet goals for visibility, engagement, policy advocacy or fundraising.
  • Content and Project Management: Establish calendar and standardized content for consistent distribution on website and social media platforms. Collaborate with colleagues for program-specific messaging needs and goals. Write clear and concise communications plans. Develop creative briefs and then work in partnership with the graphic designer, Canva or vendors to translate messaging needs into creative products that will meet goals. Establish metrics and report on results. Coordinate reviews of drafts and obtain required approvals prior to publication. Actively gather content, stories and images and manage the organization-wide content calendar. As needed, manage the work of outside agencies.
  • Writing: Write and edit content for all digital properties. Identify stories and conduct interviews and research, edit for impact and compelling, accurate information that will interest and engage readers. Deliverables include communications plans, website content, 4 blog articles per month, bi-weekly standardized social media content, digital campaigns, and more. Balance the need to tell the story of our work while preserving the dignity and privacy of clients we serve. Edit materials for AP and CVT-required styles.
  • Publishing and Promotion: Publish materials online and promote messages on social media. Manage CVT Facebook, Instagram and additional platforms, including after-hours monitoring. Identify creative ways to highlight CVT’s work that result in increased traffic and engagement on all platforms. Ensure all communications projects meet quality standards for representation of communities we serve and respect all aspects of consent.
  • Organizational Communications: Provide broad communications services on projects and requests for stories and graphics from colleagues and partners.
  • Other Duties: Participate in other department and organization-wide activities, meetings and trainings. Complete administrative responsibilities. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism or equivalent experience.
  • 4 years’ full-time communications and social media marketing experience.
  • Demonstrated success using a range of online tools in order to achieve organizational goals.
  • Demonstrated effective use of basic approval processes as well as content management and design tools, e.g. Canva and content scheduling/approval platforms.
  • Demonstrated understanding and application of ethical communications principles.
  • Strong knowledge of AP style, citation systems and use of standardized brand guidelines.

Preferred education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations

  • 5 years’ full-time communications and social media marketing experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing agency and vendor relationships.

Competencies (knowledge, skills and abilities)

  • Excellent writing skills, including the ability to write engaging stories.
  • Proficiency with basic InDesign and Photoshop functions.
  • Ability to edit and create simple videos.
  • Experience with and commitment to principles of diversity, equity and inclusion across communications strategies.
  • Commitment to engaging in human rights work, and diversity, equity and inclusion efforts within the organization.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including communications strategy and creative planning, collaboration, coordination across functional areas. Must be willing to take ownership.
  • Experience and commitment to measuring and reporting results.
  • Experience developing digital advertising strategy, campaign concepts and copywriting.
  • Ability to identify and gather a wide variety of information from multiple departments.
  • Ability and willingness to take direction and feedback.
  • Expertise increasing engagement on social media, especially Facebook & Instagram.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word and Excel) and WordPress (or similar web software).
  • Comfortable writing about content that is sometimes sensitive or confidential.
  • Understanding of the needs and interests of varied audiences, some of whom have no experience with CVT.
  • Knowledge and commitment to best practices and ethical standards in the communications, advertising and marketing fields.
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communications skills. Ability to develop and maintain professional, collaborative relationships.
  • Excellent skills in organization, attention to detail and time management (including the ability to meet deadlines)

Work Environment:

  • Typical office environment.
  • Time spent on the computer is approximately 90%.

Travel: Ability to travel to a variety of locations with potential for national or international travel.
