Who We Are

Public Justice, a nonprofit legal advocacy organization that takes on the biggest systemic threats to justice of our time – abusive corporate power and predatory practices, the assault on civil rights and liberties, and the destruction of the earth’s sustainability – is seeking to hire an experienced Development Communications Strategist

Public Justice connects high-impact litigation with strategic communications and the strength of our partnerships to fight these abusive and discriminatory systems and win social and economic justice. We ensure access to the civil justice system, protect students’ civil rights, boldly lead efforts to reform the industrial agriculture system, fight to end modern-day debtors’ prisons, enforce the nation’s most important environmental laws, and much more.

The Development Division provides support to all the project teams and the communications department through the solicitation, management and recruitment of Public Justice members, donors, foundation funders and the board of directors. Communications originating from the Development Division is critical to the success of the organization as it is usually the primary method of contact with these vital audiences and plays a key role in the strategic messaging for the organization as a whole.

What We Are Looking For

We are urgently seeking a Development Communications Strategist with an inscrutable attention to detail who also has the understanding to develop materials and messaging that fit within the organization’s branding and marketing strategy. They will be tasked with managing fundraising and marketing related digital communications and direct mailings, developing fundraising collateral, overseeing and updating the development pages on Public Justice’s website, and providing necessary communications support to maximize engagement with members, donors, and foundation funders.

The Development Communications Strategist serves in a key support role, focusing on enhancing our organization’s digital fundraising presence, marketing efforts, and donor engagement strategies. This position will be responsible for building strong relationships with internal colleagues including the communications team, the project teams and leaders, and the senior staff as needed. This position is a full-time, exempt position, remote position.

The Development Communications Strategist reports to the Director of Foundation Relations and Special Projects. Public Justice is committed to onboarding and supporting the growth and engagement of team members who choose to work remotely. For team members who seek to work in-office, we can provide an experience that supports in-person social interaction and collaboration in our hub cities of Washington D.C. and Oakland, C.A.

Key Responsibilities

1. Communication Strategy and Planning:

· Draft development-related communications, including mass fundraising emails, social media posts, donor newsletters, acknowledgment letters, and collateral for in-person events and digital communications.

· Create and maintain annual and monthly fundraising communication plans and calendars, overseeing print and digital fundraising campaigns.

· Develop and update online donation, membership, survey, and advocacy action forms in EveryAction.

· Serve as a liaison between the communications and development teams to coordinate external communications efforts.

2. Digital Outreach and Engagement:

· Draft development-related communications, including mass fundraising emails, social media posts, donor newsletters, acknowledgment letters, and collateral for in-person events and digital communications.

· Create and maintain annual and monthly fundraising communication plans and calendars, overseeing print and digital fundraising campaigns.

· Develop and update online donation, membership, survey, and advocacy action forms in EveryAction.

· Serve as a liaison between the communications and development teams to coordinate external communications efforts.

3. Content Creation and Management:

· Proofread and edit design and copy created by the development team on various collateral.

· Develop promotional merchandise and print collateral for major donor and member cultivation event.

· Support membership and major donor team with mailings, as needed.

4. Event Support and Fundraising Coordination:

· Provide primary support to the Development team during the annual fundraising Phonathon.

· Travel to development and membership recruitment events, as required (up to 10% f the time).

5. Other Responsibilities:

· Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

Experience:

3-5 years of hands-on experience with Communications, Fundraising or related work in the non- profit sector preferred.

Communication Skills:

Strong ability to convey ideas clearly and persuasively through written communication. Impeccable attention to detail in crafting communications materials, including fundraising appeals, donor correspondence, and event invitations.

Attention to detail and Multi-tasking:

Ability to manage multiple assignments concurrently while maintaining high-quality work and meeting deadlines. Capacity to prioritize tasks effectively and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Collaborative Skills:

Extensive experience working with diverse coalitions and spokespeople, showcasing a genuine commitment to incorporating values of diversity, equity, access and inclusion into external messaging campaigns.

Work Ethic and Initiative:

Strong work ethic, coupled with initiative, showcasing a proactive approach to challenges and tasks.

Sound Judgement and Confidentiality:

Demonstrated good judgment in handling sensitive information and maintaining confidentiality in all communications and interactions. Ability to exercise discretion when dealing with confidential donor data and organizational information.

Salary

We offer a mission-focused work environment, a teamwork and community-oriented approach, and a competitive compensation package. The salary for this position is $61,920.00 - $76,680.00, commensurate with experience.
