Job description

The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center of The University of Iowa is seeking a Communications Specialist to plan, develop, implement and assess communication and outreach efforts that represent Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center (HCCC) programs using diverse materials and channels, including print, digital, broadcast and social media; public events; displays and exhibitions; and public speech. Target communications to and build relationships with University of Iowa students, faculty, and staff; physicians and community-based care providers; current and prospective donors; professional and industry partners; Iowa residents; prospective students and other external and internal audiences. Works in close collaboration with the UI Center for Advancement and UI Health Care Marketing and Communications. Duties to include:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of internal communication strategies, plans and solutions for HCCC. Work closely with UI Health Care Marketing and Communications on external marketing and communications strategies.
  • Develop content that best conveys key messages and helps support key goals for the Cancer Center. Insure integration of content across different media, including faculty profiles, research grant highlights, new clinical research study openings, etc.
  • Write and publish information aimed at diverse audiences and tailoring the message and content to maximize effectiveness.
  • Perform editing, accuracy review and fact checking for grant applications.
  • Query and present publications for Cancer Center Support Grant reports and renewal process, edit citations, maintain endnote database, update journal impact factor grid, maintain MyNCBI with HCCC Director, assist authors with NIHMS/PMCID compliance. Share publications with Program Leaders on a regular basis.
  • Ensure integration of content and alignment with branding standards across all mediums of communication. Develop PowerPoint presentations for leadership to deliver key messages to faculty and staff, consistent with brand guidelines.
  • Continuously review and ensure consistency across information published on external and internal websites. Develop and/or review requested changes on behalf of the Cancer Center and submit updates for Cancer Center website.
  • Establish baselines and goals for determining the effectiveness of communication plans or channels.
  • Responsible for the biweekly HCCC Newsletter, HCCC Annual report, and select clinical research investigators such as SPORE publications.
  • Create content, maintain, monitor and engage with external and internal audiences through Cancer Center's Facebook and Twitter profiles and individual provider social accounts as needed.
  • Compose non-routine correspondence requiring independent judgment in the application of policies and procedures both in assigned and related work areas and working within established guidelines.
  • Manage projects, track progress and ensure timeliness of completion, communicate to internal and external clients.
  • Provide support for outreach events, including the Courage Ride and potentially other larger third-party fundraisers.
  • Create and distribute surveys via Qualtrics or other database survey tools.
  • May initiate and approve routine fiscal transactions. Assist in budget development for specific area and provide projections and recommendations. Select bids, choose vendors, and evaluate program effectiveness.
  • May provide direction, assignments, and feedback to student workers and/or staff.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 1-3 years of professional writing, communications experience.
  • 1-3 years of experience in work-related social media communication.
  • Demonstrated experience in written correspondence.
  • Demonstrated experience with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in computer software applications, i.e. Microsoft PowerPoint.

Desirable Qualifications
  • Knowledge of University of Iowa policies, procedures and regulations.
