Position Summary:
The Communications Manager must be committed to the mission, vision, and services of Roots Community Health Center. They must be able to communicate these in written and verbal format to potential supporters, stakeholders, funders, and collaborative partners. This position ensures consistency and accuracy of messaging that will broaden the organization’s reach. The Communications Manager develops and implements integrated communications strategies, cultivates relationships, and supports policy advocacy efforts with the overarching goal of elevating the profile and broadening the impact of Roots’ work. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment and is passionate about team building and staff development.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Leads and provides direction for members of the communication team, including yearly plans and content development.
Support staff to meet goals, motivate them through challenges, and ensure they have all the support they need to excel in their jobs.
Clearly communicate tasks, goals, and expectations to supervised staff.
Support the Director of Resource Development and Executive Leadership team as needed to ensure appropriate representation of the organization at relevant venues.
Engage with program leaders to create compelling narratives and storytelling program to , inform, shape, lead and build awareness of Roots programs and people dedicated to creating systems change
Coordinates integrated communications across social media, internal and external communications.
Understand Roots' policy advocacy focused on overall community health including, health equity, healthcare and benefits access, criminal justice reform.
Competencies
Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred. Masters or advanced degree in Communications, Public Relations, Public Policy, Public Health, or related field preferred. Candidates with an Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) are encouraged to apply.
At least 5 years of experience working in a communication related position, preferably at a nonprofit, community-based organization, or community clinic.
Ability to be responsible, professional, and able to motivate staff to work together toward a common goal.
Ability to work as a leader and as part of a team.
Proficiency in website maintenance and graphic design software.
Project and relationship management.
Creating messaging for different audiences and platforms.
Writing and content creation.
Strategic communications planning and thinking.
Experience developing an organizational communications plan.
Media experience.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Familiarity with Oakland’s health disparities issues and needs.
Interest/proficiency in working on issues affecting urban underserved, impoverished and marginalized communities of color.
Ability to work on site up to full-time as needed.
