VCU Libraries seeks a Communications Coordinator in the Office of Communications and Public Relations who will support numerous generalist functions in the department. Duties will include creating basic graphic design (signs, posters and web); writing and editing (web pages, social media and blogs); and event support. The candidate will contribute to varied platforms including blogs, newsletters and the library's news center. The coordinator will prepare art placements and illustrations for the library's website and various e-publications, manage files of art and photography, create posters, and more.
The position offers room for creativity and working on diverse public relations and communications initiatives.
Additional duties may be assigned, depending on the skill set and interests of the successful candidate. An individual work plan and goals for the position will be developed as part of VCU's talent management system in collaboration with the supervisor.
Specific tasks will include:
• Perform communications tasks on tight deadlines. These tasks include:
- Post regularly to Instagram
- Post Today in Cabell Library during the two main semesters and This Week in Cabell during summer months
- Manage files and schedule exhibits for The Cabell Screen, working with the Communications Director and the Cabell Screen Committee
- Manage images/posters showing on in-building screens. This requires sizing and scheduling elements and mastery of the universitywide software system
- Size, edit and upload images to T4 website management system, the university's content management software for websites
- Illustrate articles used in Year in Review online report and news stories published online
- Create or locate copyright-free artwork to illustrate newsletter elements and blog posts
- Design Year in Review report in Exposure platform and other materials as assigned
- Assist in updating templates for signs and all branded matter (templates, PowerPoint, e stationary, etc.) with new branding
- Update The Bottom Line, a periodic newsletter posted in building restrooms
- Assist with art elements posted to the libraries home page
- Assist with events webpages and faculty newsletters
- Execute varied, often last-minute requests, for signs, posters, help with PowerPoint, etc.
• Support for VCU Libraries events. This position is the primary back-up to the Events Manager and requires mastering on-site technology and processes, procedures and policies regarding rooms set-up, housekeeping oversight, catering and other functions related to events management after training, which will be provided. These tasks require flexibility, patience, diplomacy and keen customer service skills.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule to accommodate events staffing and scheduling. This includes occasional evening or weekend hours.
Minimum Hiring Standards:
• Undergraduate degree in commercial art or mass communications or related degree or equivalent experience
• Excellent customer service attitude and sense of stewardship
• Ability to juggle multiple assignments and complete them at a fast pace with minimal supervision.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule around needed support for events
• Working knowledge of AP Style and basic professional writing skills
• Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite software and social media platforms
• Willingness to gain new technical skills
• Excellent customer service attitude and sense of stewardship
Preferred Hiring Standards:
• Graphic arts training or proven talent
