Job Title: Communications and Marketing Manager

Supervisor: Chief Advancement Officer

Location: New York City- In person

Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Status: Exempt, 12 Months

Salary: $80K-95K, commensurate with experience

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Communications and Marketing Manager is an integral part of the Cooke School community. They will be responsible for the execution and management of marketing, public relations, fundraising communications, and branding efforts at Cooke School. As the communications expert, the manager supports the Advancement team and school leadership in promoting new and existing programs and campaigns.


The successful candidate will implement communications campaigns that align with the school's strategic plan, the Cooke Institute, and Advancement goals. This position involves strategic marketing planning and managing advancement and school communications, including electronic and print publications, marketing materials, social media tools, and website content. Essential skills include expertise in social media platforms, WordPress, Salesforce, Marketing Cloud, Adobe Design Suite, Final Cut, and iMovie.


The Communications and Marketing Manager will be a creative and strategic thinker with excellent writing, design, and social media skills. They must demonstrate the ability to manage a complex communications program while maintaining a steadfast focus on advancing the school's mission. Desired qualifications include at least five years of experience, exemplary writing, editing, and speaking skills, experience creating communications plans, familiarity with a wide range of new and traditional media, and the ability to manage multiple priorities. Experience in public relations and with independent schools is desirable. The manager reports to the Chief Advancement Officer.


Manager’s Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate effectively with all relevant members of the school community to provide communications support in line with Cooke’s mission and strategic goals.

  • Promote and ensure Cooke’s brand and programs through the creation and use of compelling visuals and new media initiatives.

  • Develop and implement a broad-based strategy to build Cooke’s brand reputation as a thought leader in special education.

  • Create and strategically disperse promotional materials, publications, newsletters, blogs and all necessary communications to support internal school communications, external fundraising, special events, and board meetings.

  • Conceptualize, write, and produce printed marketing materials and the annual report for school-wide communications.

  • Maintain and monitor analytics for the growth of the website and social media platforms.

  • Coordinate and collaborate with the School Leadership Teams and Cooke Institute regarding marketing and communication needs.

  • Create and implement a comprehensive public relations strategy for Cooke.

  • Conduct public and media relations related to special events.

  • Support government relations and advocacy efforts.

  • Attend and support school events and assist in the planning and execution of Advancement events, occasionally providing support outside of regular business hours.


Professional Development

All Cooke staff are responsible for developing a professional growth plan with their supervisor. Staff training is an integral part of the Cooke School and as such is a requirement of the job. All staff must at a minimum: attend all scheduled Staff Development activities throughout the year and participate in staff orientation scheduled for the last week in August.
