Join an award-winning Library! The Schaumburg Township District Library is looking for a YouthCollection Management Librarianto join our team. We are looking for an energetic, competent and detail-oriented Collection Management Librarian to support our Youth Services Department at our Central location.

This full time, hourly position working 37.5 hours a week during library hours, to include some nights and weekends on rotation.

Our schedules are based on the needs of the library and could change if and when needed. The annual salary range for this position is $51,500-$64,389 based on skills and qualifications.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Collection Librarian is responsible for ensuring that the department’s collections are up-to-date, represent the diversity of our community, and are easily accessible by patrons. They facilitate departmental collection initiatives and projects, coordinate purchasing of all youth materials, and work with selectors to ensure budgets are spent and collections are maintained.

The Librarian is responsible for assessing and fulfilling the patrons’ need for information or materials. The vital role of the Librarian is that of guidance, directions, and instruction. The Librarians also responsible for weeding and adding to specific areas of the circulating collection and for satisfying public service requirements. The Librarian II focuses additional attention to managing a specialized area.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES:

Public Service

  • Maintain and market the Youth Service collection.
  • Create and implement age-appropriate programs and services that meet the needs of our patrons, and evaluate the impact and effectiveness through reports, outcome-based measures, survey data, patron feedback, and library programming objectives.
  • Lead or assist in the design, implementation and evaluation of new department collections that support library initiatives, department objectives, and community demand.
  • With direction from the Department Director, facilitate all Youth Department Collection Management initiatives and projects; including coordination with other departments to schedule necessary work, and designing work plan for projects.
  • Service as the department’s liaison to the Access Services Department and outside vendors.
  • Coordinate the purchasing of youth materials among the Youth Department selectors.
  • Cultivate sections of the Youth Services collection as assigned.
  • Develop, track, and monitor assigned operating budget and produce reports.
  • Create and conduct tours, presentations, and off-sit outreach.
  • Reconcile vendor invoices and assign appropriate accounts for billing.
  • Assess patrons effectively and efficiently, either in person, over the telephone, or in writing.
  • Develop strong research skills and techniques to help patrons to the fullest degree possible.
  • Work with all age groups effectively.
  • Provide information, reference services, readers’ advisory to a diverse population. Be a creative problem solver, who takes responsibility to satisfy a patron’s request.
  • Give information, based on a primary source from a reliable authority.
  • Serve as “Person in Charge” of the Youth Services Department, in the absence of the Director of Youth Services and when he or she is the senior person at the Youth Services Reference Desk.
  • Manage and complete special projects as requested.


Professional Development

  • Collection:
    • Evaluate, purchase, and weed materials in assigned collection areas.
    • Maintain working knowledge of the Library’s reference tools and materials, the online catalog, and Internet resources and social media.
    • Instruct patrons in the use of the Library’s reference tools and materials, the online catalog, and the Internet.
    • Maintain working knowledge of the Library’s circulating collection.

  • Community:
    • Stay informed about the names of officials, organizations, clubs, businesses, schools, social agencies, etc., in the greater Schaumburg area.
    • Keep apprised of the offerings of neighboring public and special libraries.
    • Keep apprised of the popular trends inside and outside of the library world and apply best practices.

  • Other Duties:
    • Maintain professional involvement in the library science industry.
    • Refine or enhance reference skills by reading professional literature and attending seminars, workshops, and professional meetings.
    • Keep current on the theories of child and adolescent learning, literacy and brain development, and their application to library services.
    • Keep current on age-appropriate trends, emerging technologies, issues and research in librarianship, education, and allied fields.
    • Represent the library at regional and national professional meetings; attend meetings and training as required or requested.
    • Participate in library-wide committees and attend monthly meetings.
    • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Master’s of Library Science (MLA) from an ALA accredited school or university. Experience in collection development and providing programs for Youth and their caregivers. Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications is required.
