Position Overview
Primary Purpose of Position
The counselor works with a diverse student population with concerns related to addictions, personal, and career development. The following represent some of the processes in completing the counseling duties: establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, other staff members, campus community, and general public; exercise, good judgment in appraising situations and making recommendations and clinical decisions; maintain daily records of all students receiving on-going counseling; make appropriate referrals to other agencies; make appropriate and effective use of counseling interventions, resources, and instruments.
The counselor administers and interprets individual test results; conducts seminars for outreach counseling; completes the logistics necessary for an effective session. The incumbent is responsible for counseling students in the area of personal adjustment, academic and career counseling; conducting counseling sessions, networking with other counselors or student service personnel. The counselor participates in planning and creating programming activities and research; supervises graduate mental health interns and practicum students; assists students in gaining self-understanding and self-acceptance through individual and group counseling; prepares case files on all clients; works closely with other professional staff members who may be involved in planning and developing student service programs; applies good judgment in appraising situations and making recommendations and decisions; practices sound counseling methods; applies excellent communication and interpersonal skills while interacting with students, professional counselors, and administrators; participates in special projects and serve on committee as directed by administrator.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
Counseling Services, an International Association of Counseling Services (IACS) accredited unit in the Division of Student Affairs, offers a variety of services to help all currently enrolled North Carolina A&T State University students address challenges and difficulties they may face. Our services are designed to help students understand themselves better, create and maintain healthy relationships, improve their academic performance and make satisfying career and life choices. We are dedicated to helping our students by providing brief counseling from a wide spectrum of services. Those include individual and group counseling, outreach and consultation, training and supervision, teaching, psychological testing, and research. If more intensive or specialized care is needed, we will assist with making referrals to healthcare providers in the community.
Minimum Requirements
Doctorate or Masters' degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work or related discipline from an accredited graduate program. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Preferred qualifications and experience include a minimum of two or more yeaqrs years of university counseling center experience, knowledgeable of current counseling methods, principles and appraisals, brief therapy experience, demonstrate sensitivity to diversity and multicultural issues, strong interpersonal skills, and a passion for outreach.
Required License or Certification
Licensed as a mental health provider in the NC within two years of employment
