Position Summary: The Circulation Assistant is a full time position that works with other circulation staff to make sure the Circulation department of the library is always manned, patrons receive the appropriate assistance, and Circulation runs smoothly.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for opening and closing of the Library as schedule requires
- Ensure that all library material is properly checked in and checked out
- Maintain a neat, orderly, and quiet atmosphere within the library
- Assist students in person, by phone, and email with library information and printing
- Direct students to the appropriate, qualified person for assistance
- Assist in training and scheduling workstudy staff, and insuring that workstudies are used to their fullest potential
- Cooperate with Financial Aid in overseeing workstudies
- Report maintenance and computer issues as needed
- Assist in processing daily mail, reserves, and honors projects
- Assist in the donated books process
- Assist in keeping equipment and facility reservations correct and up to date
- Conduct 5 to 10 minute physical library tours for students as scheduled
- Meet institutional expectations
- Other duties as assigned.
- Responsible to the Librarian on duty.
Opportunity for Advancement
Current library staff will be given consideration for available Librarian positions provided they are a good fit for the specific position and have attained the required MLIS or equivalent degree from an ALA accredited institution.
Physical Requirements
- Visual Abilities: Read written and electronic documents and use a computer system.
- Hearing: Hear well enough to communicate with co-workers and patrons in person and via telephone
- Dexterity: Grasping, feeling, handling library materials, writing, typing, and using the telephone, copier, and computer systems
- Mobility: Will need to operate office machines, move between library departments and work in the stacks frequently and move between other buildings on campus occasionally
- Talking: Frequently convey detailed or important information about library services and resources accurately and in a manner that can be understood
- Lifting, Pulling, and Pushing: Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and 20 pounds frequently, lift and/or move up to 20 pounds occasionally and 10 pounds frequently
- Cognitive/Emotional: Ability to critically think and concentrate, ability to remain calm when working with frustrated or anxious patrons, must be able to respond quickly to changes in conditions 75 to 100% of the time
Working Relationships
The Circulation Assistant position reports to the Dean of the Libraries and works under the supervision of the Librarian on duty. This position collaborates with other library staff and works with library patrons including faculty, staff, students, and the community.
Work Schedule
Hester Memorial Library hours of operation are Monday to Thursday 7:30 a.m. to midnight, Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday noon to 5 p.m., Sunday 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Hours may vary during holidays and when classes are not in session.
Primary work schedule 35.5-39 hours per week depending on need.
M-T 7:25 am to 4 pm
W 4pm to midnight
Th 10am to 5pm
Sat 12pm to 5pm
This position requires working one night per week closing. That night may vary depending on staffing needs. An every other Saturday rotation may be a possibility.
Travel
No overnight travel, minimal day trips for professional development.
- Associate’s degree or the equivalent with skills in office equipment and computer use
- Desire to provide outstanding service to library patrons
