Job Summary
The Child Life Resident Dog Handler is responsible for oversight of the assigned Resident Dog and serves as the primary handler for the dog. The primary handler provides Child Life clinical interventions, utilizing the Resident Dog to promote healing, play, normalization of environment, positive coping and motivation in meeting clinical treatment goals. Oversees and prioritizes the referral process for therapeutic visits with patients, families and staff and demonstrates the ability to safely and effectively control, manage and care for the dog.
Pay Range
Minimum $24.96 Midpoint $33.07 Maximum $41.19
Rate of pay is determined by various factors, including but not limited to knowledge, skills, competencies, experience, education, as well as position requirements.
Experience
  • Required: Minimum two years working as a certified Child Life specialist in a pediatric healthcare setting.
  • Preferred: Four years of clinical experience as a certified Child Life Specialist.
Education
  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Child Life, Child Development, Family Studies or related field. Must meet current certified Child Life Specialist educational requirements set forth by the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP).
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in Child Life, Child Development or related field.
Training
  • Required: Must have completed a clinical internship under the direct supervision of a certified Child Life specialist in a pediatric healthcare setting. The handler selected to provide services in the Mental Health Inpatient Center (MHIC) must complete all pre-service and in-service MHIC training requirements.
Specialized Skills
  • Required: Ability to build and establish positive relationships with patients, families and multidisciplinary team. Ability to interact with donors and the community. Exceptional customer service standards. Ability to prioritize and complete duties in a timely manner, working collaboratively with all disciplines in the organization. Familiarity with Resident Dog programs and its benefits. Strong knowledge of infant, child, and adolescent growth and development. · Strong knowledge of therapeutic play and coping facilitation techniques.
Licensure
  • Required: Certified Child Life Specialist through the Association of Child Life Professionals. Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association or CHOC BLS Prep Course for RQI completed within 90 days of hire or transfer into position.
Work Environments - Functional Demand:
Medium - High energy level Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. Push/pull +/- 150-200 lbs. (Patients on bed, stretcher) Lateral transfer 150-200 lbs. (ie. Patient) .
