Job Summary and Purpose
The Chief Financial Officer is a key player in helping Tennyson realize its bold ambitions. Tennyson (TCC) must run exceptionally well to succeed, and staff must be empowered to manage finances with a relentless focus on helping children heal and reintegrate. The Chief Financial Officer will drive this critical change and sustain its gains so that TCC thrives. The Chief Financial Officer is central to Tennyson’s success, is a member of the senior leadership team and reports to the Chief Executive Officer.

Essential Job Functions
- Manage the finances of Tennyson so that the organization is clear on its financial health, can make changes as needed to accelerate change on behalf of children or reconsider expenses that could be better used to achieve our overarching mission;
- Enhance, strengthen and harmonize financial systems and processes so that TCC can operate most effectively and efficiently;
- Drive billing and ensure that TCC reaches or exceeds its targets of a 95% recovery rate on billing. The Chief Financial Officer will also help us build the case with billing agencies on additional fees we can recover, and the Chief Financial Officer will lead on helping TCC understand what it really costs to help children heal (which has national implications and will help us succeed in areas of advocacy);
- Ensure that TCC remains well positioned through clean audits and solid 990 submissions;
- Serve as a key and in many ways direct liaison to the Board of Directors and work with them, as with staff, on the state of our finances and the challenges we face moving forward;
- Monitor external trends, cycles, and events that could affect TCC and help TCC proactively respond to emergent challenges and opportunities. These include financial trends in
- Government budgets and funding trends
- Child welfare
- Compliance & regulatory
- Philanthropy
- Define financial metrics linking strategic plan and vision to ongoing monitoring and reporting to stakeholders (the real cost of results - specifically, for X outcome it costs TCC $Y).
Responsibilities
- Serves on the Senior Leadership Team, represent TCC at all Board of Director meetings and lead from TCC on the Finance Committee.
- Create a monthly financial analysis that clarifies TCC’s financial health and offers tangible ideas/strategies to become more efficient, to address shortfalls and to maximize opportunities for growth;
- Ensure the financial statements are completed timely and accurately.
- Deliver regular financial reporting and forecasting to staff, the Board and the Finance Committee;
- Lead the financial department at TCC and oversee the organization’s financial integrity;
- Build out annual performance targets with CEO and meet/exceed those targets individually and as a department;
- Manage cash, and develop cash flow analysis, forecasting, and modeling tools/dashboards;
- Assess and mitigate financial risk, including active participation in charity watchdog organizations;
- Maintain 95% billing success and complete the transition from paper to electronic billing and lead on rate setting negotiations with Programs as needed;
- Manage Financial Edge ERP or equivalent and ensure its effective synchronization with Raiser’s Edge;
- Direct and oversee general fund and property accounting, payroll, internal auditing, cost accounting, financial forecasting and budgetary controls;
- Enhance TCC’s financial literacy by playing a lead role in educating and training staff in all departments about their budgets, their current financial results, and how it impacts the agency;
- Serve as agency’s endowment custodian and staff lead on the Investment Committee;
- Manage working capital and investment strategies;
- Work with COO to develop and monitor capital budgeting and financial analysis for growth plans and financing needs;
- Lead the annual budgeting process with management team and compile the annual budget and present to the Board
- Lead TCC on understanding financial trends and projections moving forward so we can make sound decisions;
- Manage the Finance Department staff soundly and for success;
- Manage the annual auditing process and submit 990;
- Maintain our 501 c 3 status and ensure TCC remains in compliance with financial accreditation and licensing standards;
- Respect racial, ethnic and cultural differences of all clients and staff;
- Build Tennyson’s reputation as a unique partner that all want to be associated with as we collectively reshape the child welfare sector; and
- Design and enforce sound internal controls to safeguard agency assets
Minimum Qualifications
- BS in accounting or equivalent. Masters and CPA preferred;
- At least ten years of relevant experience, along with at least five years in a senior leadership position; and Nonprofit agency experience preferred.
