Job description

Position Summary: Children's Bureau seeks a collaborative, mission-driven, and growth-minded Chief Financial Officer to assume a pivotal role in the continued strategic growth of a high-impact, well-respected organization. This leader will have demonstrable experience with navigating multiple complex funding streams and managing cash flow within a large, multifaceted organization. Reporting to and partnering with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the CFO will be responsible for the overall management of the agency's $60M+ budget, development and implementation of the organization's financial strategy, and oversight of the Finance, Accounting, Facilities, and Information Technology teams. The CFO will be a key contributor within a close-knit Executive Leadership Team and will help shape organizational strategy as well as manage all financial aspects of the agency, including management of accounting operations and investments, financial reporting and analysis, budgeting and forecasting, compliance and risk management, audit coordination, and tax credits and filings. The CFO will be a transparent leader who can work closely with the CEO, peers, direct reports, board members, auditors, external consultants, and other internal stakeholders to manage the financial and administrative needs of the organization. This position will manage a team of 15, with 4 direct reports. Key Responsibilities Organizational & Thought Leadership Be a strategic advisor to the Executive Leadership Team on all financial matters and all growth plans and projects within Children's Bureau, making recommendations and suggesting pro-active strategies to keep the organization financially sound. Transparent in keeping the executive and senior management team, Board, and staff up-to-date on financial status of the organization. Actively participate in all internal planning regarding any Children's Bureau program expansion, to ensure alignment of program, outreach, and training plans with financial projections Effectively manage relationships with board members, banks, donors, government agencies, vendors, outside consultants and others external stakeholders. Directly oversee Finance, Accounting, Facilities, and Information Technology teams. Financial Acumen & Oversight Oversee budgeting, budget implementation, tracking short- and long-term goals, and reconciliation to monitor progress. Present clear, relevant, and actionable financial information across the organization and to the Senior Leaders, Board, and Finance Committee. Develop transparent forecasting capabilities that enable senior leadership to make data-driven, forward-thinking decisions in a multi-program environment that also accounts for risk. Oversee all accounts, ledgers and reporting systems, ensuring compliance, regulatory and audit requirements. Maintain internal control safeguards and coordinate all audit activities. Manage the preparation of all financial reports, financial outlooks, and financial forecasts; design and produce management reports and financial statements in accordance with GAAP, and donor requirements. Provide strategic guidance to evaluate, eliminate, and/or improve manual or low -tech procedures/processes that impede efficiency. Collaborative & Trust Building Leader Foster trust and collaboration among team members and possess the ability to create buy-in with varied stakeholder groups, managing through change with flexibility and poise. Provide guidance and direction to engage and support team members at all levels while ensuring a culture of accountability. Keen focus on talent acquisition and recruitment while fostering a culture of training and professional development. Desired qualifications The Chief Financial Officer will be mission-centric and will bring a demonstrated track record of leading the financial, technology, and administrative strategy in a large complex organization. The CFO will be highly collaborative and have the ability to build cohesion and coordination among a diverse team working on a wide range of projects across multiple functions, addressing and solving challenges as they arise. While it's understood that no single candidate will bring every single competency, strong candidates will offer the following skills, characteristics, and experiences: Proven work experience as a CFO, preferably within a nonprofit organization. CPA strongly preferred; Top Accounting Firm experience preferred. At least 5 years' senior financial leadership experience; non-profit experience, strongly preferred. Minimum of 15 years of progressive accounting/finance experience. Deep familiarity/expertise with multiple funding sources, including State/local funding, Experience with the LA County Department of Mental Health contract preferred. Experience with working with external auditors, compliance, and regulatory oversight. Commitment to results; incorporating the Children's Bureau mission and vision into daily decisions; Resilient in solving unexpected problems as they arise while considering liability, precedence, financial implications, and other possible future impact to the organization. Experience with leadership and change management. Strong motivational and staff leadership abilities. Excellent written and oral communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key information both verbally and in writing to CEO, Board, peers, and direct reports. Sense of humor, integrity, personal sense of accountability. Proficient in technology (ie Microsoft 365) and experience in integrating IT/Systems to improve productivity and accuracy. Location Based in Los Angeles, CA, or surrounding areas, at this time, we work in a hybrid environment. Our hybrid schedule allows continued flexibility for our staff with the option to work 2-3 days/week in the office and the remaining days working at home/remotely. First six months may require more in person and will progressively decrease as there is comfort and confidence in the role and with the team. Compensation and Benefits Salary is based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, skill set level and years of previous/applicable experience. Salary range for this role is between $220,000- $250,000, with a generous benefits package, which includes medical, dental and vision insurance, Life and AD&D insurance, unlimited PTO, 11 paid holidays, opt-in 401k with a generous match and access to our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program.
