Job Description

The Chief Executive Officer is the visionary leader responsible for the overall strategic direction, management, and success of the Boys and Girls Club of Lansing. The CEO provides leadership for all aspects of the Club’s operations with an emphasis on long-term goals, growth, profit and return on investment. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO will work closely with staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners to ensure the organization’s mission is effectively carried out, and its impact on the community is maximized. The CEO will serve to ensure a safe environment for the members, volunteers and staff of the Boys & Girls Club Lansing.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership

· Collaborate with the Board of Directors in establishing goals and developing policies, strategic plans, procedures, budgets, and programs that fulfill the mission of the Boys and Girls Club.

· Provide leadership to Club staff through the establishment of goals, objectives, and procedures; develops administrative and operational standards by which goals will be met.

· Utilize strong inspirational leadership skills to empower their team to drive efficiency and best practices and develop a culture of collaboration and cooperation in fulfillment of the strategic plan and operational goals.

 

Resources Development & Fundraising

· Identify, recruit, and cultivate relationships with potential donors, foundations, and partners to secure and increase financial support for the organization’s annual budget and long-term financial viability.

· Create and execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy to sustain and expand the organization’s programs and services.

 

Staff Development & Retention

· Oversee staffing activities of the organization, including recruiting, selecting, training, supervising and evaluation of both paid and volunteer staff.

· Employ comprehensive staff attraction and retention strategies, which includes bringing the organization up to market competitive salaries and benefit packages.

 

Financial

· Develop and manage the annual budget, ensuring responsible financial stewardship and accountability.

· Monitor financial performance and work closely with the Board of Directors to ensure the organization’s financial sustainability.

· Assure management and staffing of resources necessary to ensure the organization’s financial operations are conducted in accordance with applicable laws.

· Helps to build a diverse and inclusive Board representative of the community that is highly engaged and willing to leverage and secure resources.

 

Strategic Management

· Provide professional leadership in collaboration with the Board of Directors to assure development of an effective and motivated Board, including identification, recruitment, training, and involvement of Board members in fundraising and meeting the goals of the organization.

· Partnering with the Board of Directors, the CEO will proactively provide factual and timely information needed to make high-level strategic decisions.

· Assure the organization’s compliance with membership and other requirements or standards of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and compliance of applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

· The CEO and Board Chair are the only persons authorized to execute both offensive and defensive communications and customer experience strategies. They are responsible for all public relations within the Club; building, sustaining and managing the organization’s reputation as seen and understood by the public and the Club’s various stakeholders.

 

Partnership Development

· Develop strategic alliances with community leaders and local officials. Develop collaborative partnerships with other community organizations, members, parents, families, funders (foundations, businesses and individuals).

 

Marketing and Public Relations

· Work with Professional Program Staff to maintain visibility of Club programs, services and activities as well as maintain good public relations.

· Serve as brand manager for the organization.

 

Governing Board Responsibilities

· Works with the governing Board to ensure the organization’s financial health, operations, and program progress and/or initiatives are managed and on task.

· Works with the Board to recruit new Board members.

· Works with the Board to establish short-term objectives and long-range goals related to plans and policies.

· Presents regular reports to the Board, relating to the organization’s operations, fundraising and financial status.

· Participates in various sub-committees (e.g., Finance, HR, Program Advisory, etc.).

· Oversees the Administrative Coordinator’s role as a Liaison to the Board.

· Develops relationships, increasing resources to the organization via networking and fundraising.

 

Experience/Skills/Competencies Required:

· A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university preferred.

· A minimum of five years applicable work experience, preferably in a non-profit agency that is a youth service organization, having increasingly responsible leadership roles.

· Maintain updated clearances as required by the Boys and Girls Club of America.

· Demonstrated record of results in fundraising and the cultivation of major gift donors

· Demonstrated ability to develop and implement a Strategic Plan, establish supporting goals, and work collaboratively with staff and the Board of Directors to accomplish those goals.

· Demonstrated ability to organize, direct, plan and coordinate operations in a multifaceted organization.

· Demonstrated leadership skills, including negotiation, problem solving, decision making and delegation.

· Strong communication skills, both verbal and written; ability to speak effectively and persuasively to groups and individuals, including but not limited to children, staff, Board of Directors, government, political and community offices and agencies.

· Some travel required (overnight) for conferences and trainings on behalf of the organization.
