Job Description:
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), working at the direction of the Psychiatric and Medical Healthcare Providers, and in conjunction with the Chief Operating Officer, Chief Clinical Officer, Program Directors and support staff regarding the mental and physical wellbeing of each client. CMAs perform routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep the services provided by physicians and other health practitioners running smoothly. The duties of CMAs vary from setting to setting, depending on the size, location, and type. In addition to administrative duties, Medical Coordinator performs clinical duties in accordance to state law.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
• Able to communicate effectively with team and pharmacy, as required
• Organizational skills to coordinate Healthcare Provider medical/psychiatric care of incoming and existing residents
• Advanced knowledge of the proper Medical Observation Procedures to effectively train new employees
• Knowledge of medical terminology to receive and transcribe orders from medical providers
• Ability to perform reconciliations of medication for residents from intake to discharge
• Understanding of State and Federal laws as they apply to protecting the confidentiality of client records
• Knowledge of rules and regulation governing substance abuse treatment
Responsibilities:
• Schedules off campus medical appointments at the request of Medical Teams.
• Responsible for working with DON to address any day to day medical needs that may arise,
• Attend Staff meetings to provide Healthcare provider updates, clarification, new prescription medications and/or changes to existing prescriptions, appointment schedules and any other orders from the providers as it pertains to individual clients.
• Verifies patient information and responsible for Requesting/Sending Medical Records as required
• Coordinate with admissions department for any potential medical need or ambulatory detox need for admitting clients,
• Supports patient care delivery by helping health care providers during examinations; preparing laboratory specimens; disposing of contaminated supplies; administering medications on the premises; authorizing drug refills as directed; telephoning prescriptions to pharmacies; ensuring medication audits, documentation and observation policies and procedures are adhered to by staff directly involved in these processes and provides training to support staff performance and knowledge.
• Educates patients by providing medication and diet information and instructions; answering questions.
• Performs, at a minimum, monthly audits of medication self-administration observation and inventory, proper medication storage and all related documentation.
• Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
• Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
• Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following, and enforcing standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
• Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping patient care information confidential.
• Serves and protects the physician or health care provider practice by adhering to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) standards.
• Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
• Enhances health care practice reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
Competencies:
• Effective written and oral communication skills with medical team and chain of command
• Proficient in performing and training staff on waived testing (urine drug screen, glucometer, pregnancy)
• Proficient in performing and training staff on Medication Observation
• Effectively coordinates plan of care with medical team and medical director
• Ensures to use the utmost of care in protecting the confidentiality of client records in accordance with State and Federal laws.
• Performs medication reconciliation upon admission and discharge through the process of creating the most accurate list possible of all medications a client is taking — including drug name, dosage, frequency, and route, indication — and comparing that list against the physician's admission, transfer, and/or discharge orders
• Monitors and maintains counting of controlled medications to avoid diversion and medication errors including ‘good catches’/near misses.
● Knowledge of rules and regulations governing substance abuse treatment
● Effectively receives, transcribes and reads back telephone orders from all medical providers
Minimum Requirements:
• Certified Medical Assistant by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or similar association or voluntary National Certification as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or American Medical Technologist (AMT)
• Nationally certified as a Registered Medical Assistant (AMT) by the American Medical Technologist (AMT) or similar association or board
• 2-years working experience in direct patient care
