OTHER: Works with builders, construction contractors, the general public, and city departments as the need arises GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Building Inspector is responsible for reviewing commercial and residential building, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC construction plans for compliance with city codes and ordinances.
He or she is also responsible for the enforcement of other applicable state and federal laws. The Building Inspector must be able to work effectively with citizens and contractors to resolve problems and identify potential code violations and to perform any other duties as may be assigned or directed. Minimum Qualifications EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED: - 1.
High school diploma or GED equivalent. 2. Two (2) years residential and commercial construction experience.
3. A valid Texas driver's license. 4.
State Plumbing Inspector's license within one (1) year of employment. 5. Must obtain ICC Certification within two (2) years of employment.
Failure to obtain a State Plumbing Inspector's license within one (1) year of employment or an ICC Certification within two (2) years of employment will result in termination of employment unless an extension is granted in writing for good cause by the Assistant City Manager. Physical Requirements The Building Inspector must be able to lift and carry up to 20 pounds and to pull, push, or drag up to 50 pounds of materials and supplies. The Building Inspector is required to run, walk, climb, kneel, squat, stoop, bend, and sit while inspecting construction sites and must be able to work in confined spaces.
The Building Inspector must use eyes, ears, nose, hands and fingers to perform assigned duties and responsibilities. This position requires the employee to have 20/20 vision with or without corrective lenses due to detail required in work. The job of Building Inspector is performed indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, temperature swings, and inclement weather.
In addition, the position entails some exposure to heights; mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards; fumes and odors; dust; mites; and toxic waste hazards. Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, & Training REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND TRAINING: The Building Inspector must have a good working knowledge of residential and commercial building construction standards, methods, and practices; building codes and the applicability of said codes to individual projects; must be able to communicate well, both orally and in writing; must be able to make reasonable judgments based upon knowledge of applicable laws and ordinances; must be familiar with regulations concerning fire prevention and emergency management planning; and must be able to work with city staff and the general public. In emergency situations, the Building Inspector must be able to exercise good judgment and to coordinate the efforts of co-workers; to react calmly and quickly, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with federal, state, and local government officials as well as with other city departments and the general public.
