Under supervision, to assist with performing a variety of general maintenance and semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of County of buildings, facilities, fixtures, and building equipment; to perform Grounds Maintenance duties; and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Building & Grounds Maint. Worker I
This is the entry and first working level in the Building and Grounds Maintenance Worker class series. Incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of County buildings, facilities, and related machinery and equipment. Incumbents assist with the more skilled assignments under direct guidance. As incumbents demonstrate requisite skills and knowledge on a sustained basis, it is expected that they will be promoted to the Building and Grounds Maintenance Worker II level. This class is distinguished from Building Maintenance Worker II in that incumbents work with more guidance and supervision, performing a narrower range of assignments, which require a lower level of skill.
Building & Grounds Maint. Worker II
This is the fully experienced working level in the Building and Grounds Maintenance Worker class series. Incumbents perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of County buildings, facilities, and related machinery and equipment. Assignments involve painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and HVAC repairs. Incumbents also perform Grounds Maintenance work. This class is distinguished from Building and Grounds Maintenance Worker I in that incumbents work with less guidance and supervision, performing a broader range of assignments which require a higher level of skill.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; ability to walk in uneven terrain and on slippery surfaces; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; ability to crawl through various areas requiring movement on hands and knees; ability to climb, stoop, crouch, and kneel; lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; perform sustained physical work; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment, including computer, telephone, calculator, copiers, and FAX; operate an automobile; use hand tools and power equipment.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in building and outdoor environments; work is performed in varying temperatures; exposure to dust, chemicals, and gases; exposure to electrical currents; continuous contact with other staff.(The following is used as a partial description and is not restrictive as to duties required.)
Building & Grounds Maint. Worker I
Assists with performing a variety of general maintenance and semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of County buildings, facilities, and associated equipment
Assists with and performs basic carpentry, painting, plumbing, and electrical work
May respond to repair requests and make requisited repairs
Learns to maintain boilers, fire alarms, and fire extinguishers
Assists with the storage of surplus furniture and equipment
Learns to pull wire for computer systems and solder receptacles
Learns to check and maintain generators
Learns to maintain, repair, and replace fan motors
Replaces broken floor tiles
Performs general grounds keeping work
Maintains county grounds including mowing, weeding and water of turf
Under direct supervision, applies some chemicals such as herbicides and fertilizers to enhance plant growth
Assists with inspection of buildings and facilities for needed repairs
Moves furniture and equipment
Operates hand tools, power equipment, and vehicles.
Building & Grounds Maint. Worker II
Provides supervision over 1 -2 inmate assigned to assist with work projects
Performs a variety of general maintenance and semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of County buildings, facilities, and associated equipment
Performs basic carpentry, painting, plumbing, and electrical work
Responds to repair requests and makes requisite repairs
Maintains heat and air conditioning systems
Maintains fire alarms and fire extinguishers
Maintains, repairs, and replaces fan motors
Replaces broken floor tiles
Performs general grounds keeping work such as mowing, weeding and watering turf
Applies some chemicals such as herbicides and fertilizers to enhance plant growth as necessary
Assists with inspection of buildings and facilities for needed repairs
Moves furniture and equipment
Operates hand tools, power equipment, and vehicles
May oversee Community Service Workers.Any combination of training and experience, which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying.

Previous work experience in building and/or Grounds Maintenance work is highly desirable.
Building & Grounds Maint. Worker II
One year of building maintenance experience comparable to that of a Building and Grounds Maintenance Worker I with San Benito County.
Special Requirements:

Recognize and locate conditions which require maintenance and repair .
