Under the general supervision of the Agriculture Program Supervisor I, the Brand Inspector independently brand inspections of livestock at stockyards, shipping points, ranches, slaughterhouses, feedlots and facilitate livestock transfer of ownership transactions; and assures lawful ownership, enforce brand registration and inspection laws. Must have knowledge of methods of branding and marketing cattle; principles and practices of animal husbandry and the operation of livestock ranches; methods of operation use by cattle thieves; apply provisions of laws and regulations designed to prevent the theft of cattle. Ability to detect altered brands; assist in theft and estray investigations; and should be familiar with animal care standards.
The Bureau is currently recruiting to fill a Permanent Indeterminate Brand Inspector position to cover Stanislaus County and other surrounding counties when needed. This position averages approximately 159 hours per month.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Inspecting cattle for identifying marks and brands
Preparing and processing transmittals on a timely basis
Knowledge of the provisions of laws and regulations designed to prevent cattle theft
Examining various documents to determine proof of ownership
Applying principles and practices of animal husbandry
Applying formal investigation techniques
Enforcing compliance of the Hide and Brand Law
Preparing and completing concise written reports
Establishing and maintain cooperative relations with those contacted in the life of work

Desirable Qualifications
The Brand Inspector must have the ability to read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; detect altered brands; conduct investigations; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; develop and maintain cooperative relations with people contacted; understand and follow directions; make mathematical calculations; write legibly, spell correctly, use good English, prepare clear and accurate reports; and assist higher level staff in the administration of the livestock identification program. Hands-on experience with large livestock is a significant quality.
Computer skills are highly desirable.
