The hiring unit has established the following internal cut-off dates for this Job Control:

  • February 27, 2024

  • May 7 & 21, 2024
  • June 4 & 18, 2024

  • July 2,16, & 30, 2024

Under direction of the Agriculture Program Supervisor I (APSI), the Senior Brand Inspector will regularly perform the full range of brand inspection duties, independently perform the more complex field work, including leading and training less experienced inspectors. The incumbent must possess the knowledge of but not limited to, the practice and application of brand inspection, production, marketing, and trade practices of the cattle industry; familiarity with rules of evidence and court procedures. Assist investigators as necessary for detecting violations of the Hide and Brand Law. Provide leadership and guidance to BRAND INSPECTORs. This position requires a valid California Driver License, maintaining a good driving record, and a willingness to work long and irregular hours in all weather conditions.

  • Collaborate with the APS I to organize, plan, direct, supervise and monitor brand inspection.

  • Coordinate program activities and acts as liaison with industry, law enforcement and court personnel.

  • Review work reports and provides training to BRAND INSPECTORs and to field staff.

Working Conditions

The duties of this position are performed indoors and outdoors. The Brand Inspector’s primary work area is located outdoors in livestock markets, feedlots, slaughter plants and ranches. The incumbent may occasionally work under difficult conditions and be exposed to extremes in temperature, high levels of noise, heavy machinery, and various odors. Report writing is usually performed indoors and or outdoors. The Brand Inspectors private home is his/her headquarters office.

Department Information

Through ongoing inspection and investigative services, the Bureau of Livestock Identification (Bureau) protects cattle owners in California against loss of animals by theft, straying or misappropriation. The Bureaus program consists of registration of livestock brands; inspection of cattle for lawful possession prior to transportation, sale, or slaughter, and recording of the information obtained by such inspections; and assisting local law enforcement with investigations and prosecutions involving cattle theft. These activities are financed, in its entirety, through brand registration and inspection fees paid by the livestock owners.
