About the Role & Team
As an Editor in Disney Publishing, you will acquire, edit, and manage the Freedom Fire list of middle grade book titles, and acquire for the Disney Hyperion middle grade and young adult list! Working closely with the Senior Editor, the Editorial Director, and author Kwame Mbalia—Freedom Fire’s founder—the Freedom Fire Editor will be involved in talent acquisition and list planning, focused on maintaining creative brand excellence standards for the Freedom Fire line. The editor will have strong relationships with agents and authors and a keen editorial eye with a talent for commercial plotting, world-building, and character development. You will handle 6-10 books annually.
You will report to the Senior Editor- Disney Book Group
This is a Full-Time role.
What You Will Do
Every single day in the Editor role is different! On any one day, you might:
Evaluate submissions in the middle grade space for Freedom Fire, and the middle grade and YA space for Disney Hyperion
Proactively reach out to agents to identify new talent and request samples and manuscripts
Work closely with key talent, Kwame Mbalia, to craft the Freedom Fire list
Acquire and edit 6 - 10 titles per year
Present titles at sales conferences and launch meetings
Develop and maintain a strong list of agents and authors
Develop and maintain relationships with entertainment partners within the Walt Disney Company
Represent the imprint at industry events, conferences, and during internal/external presentations.
Required Qualifications & Skills
3+ years of experience in acquiring and editing Middle Grade/ Young Adult fiction books, with structural and line editing expertise
Established relationships with literary agents; negotiation skills; experience in redlining contracts
Experience managing books through the editorial/production process
Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills
Passion for creativity and a proven understanding of plot and character
Strong knowledge of the Middle Grade/Young Adult marketplace
Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently
Some travel may be required

The hiring range for this position in New York, NY is $64,800 to $89,100 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
