Job description

Responsible for leading, managing and developing the fleet maintenance team. This includes:
1. Financial responsibility for developing metrics and driving repair costs and uptime in a positive direction.
2. Operational responsibility for the inspection, operation, and timely / emergency repair of all fleet assets from a quality and service ready perspective. Establish and maintain needed spare parts and emergency equipment in a fiscally and operationally responsible manner on site.
3. Establish policy where needed to ensure that critical parts are available for emergency work.
4. Responsible for the assessment and replacement, upfitting, in-service, assignment and repurposing of Fleet vehicles and equipment in collaboration with operations and ownership.
5. Communication: Primary 24/7 contact for Fleet Maintenance for Emergency response. Effective, timely and consistent communication between operational leadership and fleet maintenance with a clear sense of urgency. Works proactively as a liaison between operations and maintenance staff.
6. Responsible for auditing inspections and follow-up on needed repairs & general maintenance.
7. Plans, collaborates with, and trains Directors, Managers, Supervisors, Mechanics, Operators and staff on proper inspection and maintenance procedures.
8. Approaches daily activities and interacts with others with a sense of urgency and a safety-first mentality.

Other Responsibilities:
Ensures that all activities are conducted in a safe, effective, professional, and efficient manner to protect employees and the assets of the Company.
1. Ability to see the “big picture”, implement strategic initiatives and execute business plans as they relate to assets.
2. Provides leadership and promotes a collaborative team environment throughout all company departments and locations. Not divisive or agenda driven.
3. Supervise and coordinate the repair and maintenance of all company equipment.
4. Establish and maintain maintenance schedules, develop work procedures, and direct the operation of the mechanics.
5. Coordinate with our in-house staff as well as onboarding third-party vendors to schedule repairs.
6. Utilization and expansion of existing and future fleet maintenance systems to track usage and maintenance.
7. Proactive member of the company leadership contributing to the development of the overall business plan. Instrumental contributor to planning, policy making and attainment of operational and financial goals.
8. Responsible for performance management, goal achievement and cost management of each shop. Establishes goals and objectives for each Division ensuring that expectations are clearly defined,
and that regular feedback is
provided from an equipment perspective.
9. Meets regularly with operations leadership to seek input, problem solve, plan for upcoming work/projects and conduct post-job reviews/debriefings to share learnings and enhance global knowledge of railroad service delivery and develop/implement processes/methods to ensure operational efficiencies.
10. Represents Cranemasters with vendors and negotiation of repairs and services they provide. Collaborates with appropriate leadership in preparation of scheduled repairs.
11. Provides support and leadership to each division to improve team-based work environment through pro-active communication, regular meetings, maintaining an open-door policy, and motivating personnel in protecting company equipment and other interests.
12. Ensures that both internal and external customer service expectations are met and/or exceeded. Works to maintain and improve current internal customer relationships; resolve internal customer concerns and collaborate on implementing corrective actions where needed.
13. Makes recommendations for the acquisition of new and/or replacement tools/vehicles/equipment for assigned divisions/territories/regions. Prepares reports and submits information justifying purchase including relationship to budget and financial status of the division/region/territory.
14. Responsible for problem solving, analyzing / monitoring work in progress to fully manage and mitigate any risks.
15. Responsible for implementation / management of safety program ensuring that goals and objectives for safety are adopted and “live” as a part of Cranemasters’ culture.
16. Provides hands-on demonstration of commitment to the company’s culture and maintenance of a positive work environment. Provides leadership and mentorship to all employees to retain a well skilled and highly capable work force.
17. Responsible for continuous improvement of operations and personnel at each assigned division.
18. Maintains safe driving habits in compliance with company, federal and state guidelines.
19. On-call 24-hours per day 7-days per week with option for off call by arrangement with SVP Fleet, Engineering and Manufacturing.
20. Other duties as assigned.


Required Skills and Experience:
1. Minimum of ten years progressively responsible experience in railroad or fleet maintenance industry, with five years’ experience engaged in vehicle and equipment inspection and maintenance, and diversified knowledge basic operating systems.
2. Ability to demonstrate alignment with company culture and values.
3. Strong and proactive communication skills.
4. Demonstrated ability to lead a team and achieve results.
5. Experience managing multiple projects/jobs and working directly with operations and mechanical groups.
6. Excellent time and project management skills.
7. Competent in conflict and crisis management.
8. Ability to analyze situations, identify problems, exercise good judgement, and utilize creativity in problem solving.
9. A thought leader able to drive team development and motivate others to strive for success and excellence.
10. Team player with ability to participate in planning processes and work with others to meet goals and objectives.
11. Proficient computer skills (including MS Office programs) and ability to learn additional software as required for operational needs including submission of inspection reports, project reports, payroll data, labor hours, etc.
12. Must project a positive and professional image to customers, co-workers, vendors, work crews, and general public.
13. Must possess a valid drivers’ license with a good driving record.
14. Able to read, write and speak English.
15. Must pass qualification tests as required (including ERail Safe and other training/safety programs).
16. Must meet 24/7 availability to respond to emergency calls for service including weekends and holidays.


Physical Demands:
1. Frequently on feet/walking on uneven surfaces and in ballast.
2. Working in ALL weather conditions.
3. Working extended hours.
4. Climbing on and off equipment understanding importance of and utilizing 3 point contact.
5. Occasional bending, twisting, stooping, standing, and / or walking.
6. Willingness to work in dirty, greasy, tight fitting places accessing items that require inspection.
7. Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds; loads in excess of 50 pounds and which can be reduced, should be made lighter.
Cranemasters is a 24/7 emergency service provider to the railroad industry and as such, the Vice President is subject to work outside of normal working hours including nights, weekends and/or holidays.
