Job description

Summary

Provide technical support for the safe and reliable operation and maintenance of the various power generation and transmission facilities owned and operated by NYPA. Engineering responsibilities include inspections, condition assessments, startup and testing, troubleshooting, calculations, design, preparation of detailed fabrication/construction drawings and specifications, inter-discipline and inter-department coordination, engineering support during construction and outage, and equipment/system evaluations for mechanical systems and equipment. #LI-VB1

Responsibilities

  • Provide responsible engineer function in support of a limited range of mechanical equipment design modification projects, equipment applications, failure research, engineering studies, and operations and maintenance activities to develop designs, specifications and engineered solutions for various the mechanical equipment and systems’ problems or improvements.
  • Assist senior staff and supervisor in performing inspections and evaluations of existing conditions for various mechanical equipment and systems for proper installation, problem identification and troubleshooting, or improvements.
  • Independently providing direction and review for the mechanical design and drafting personnel in the development of the project drawings.
  • Independently providing office and field engineering support and oversight during construction or outage activities.
  • Ensure deadlines are met as assigned by supervisors.
  • Independently coordination of work with other disciplines and departments for the successful development and execution of projects.
  • Performance of inspections and evaluations on vendor products to ensure engineering requirements and Authority needs are satisfied.
  • Gather information (site, vendors and other engineers) for engineering tasks.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic competencies in the analysis, design and integration of mechanical systems specific to the field of electric utility engineering.
  • Fundamental knowledge of mechanical systems and concepts.
  • Basic understanding of the mechanical, civil and electrical drawings.
  • Advanced understanding of the fundamental drawing and specification system.
  • Basic knowledge of and working familiarity with current codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Basic understanding of Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Basic ability to develop and execute presentations.
  • Basic knowledge of electric utility generation and transmission facilities and their various mechanical systems and components.
  • Basic Understanding of Configuration Management.
  • Basic understanding of the various Authority power generation facilities.
  • Basic knowledge of NYPA’s policies and procedures preferred.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent, from a recognized college or university.
  • Strong understanding of thermodynamic and various mechanical systems and theory and there function in the electrical utility industry preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related work experience.
     

Physical Requirements

  • Approximately 10% travel primarily within NY State.
  • Ability to access all areas of the plant and conduct physical evaluations of grounds and equipment including ability to work at high elevations.

The New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The target salary range for this position is: $86,510 - $129,770. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
