Position Summary:

This Associate Director of Video reports to the Senior Director of Video and is responsible for the production of cutting-edge videos for the Human Rights Campaign; videos that will change hearts and minds and move the LGBTQ+ community towards full equality. This Associate Director of Video will help manage the production of political coverage, including rapid response videos, occasional support with membership (specifically consumer marketing and occasional events), and in support of our programmatic work (specifically the HBCU Program, the HIV and Health Equity Program, and Youth and Family Programming). This Associate Director of Video should have excellent storytelling skills, unlimited ideas, advanced technical skills and be an excellent team player. The Associate Director of Video will value the aesthetics of filmmaking, yet understand the dynamics and shortform storytelling, ad-making and social media video.


Position Responsibilities:

  • Create award-winning, shareable videos in support of HRC’s mission with a focus on rapid response content and foundation support, from conception to delivery, including:
    pre-production
    • -pitching ideas, writing scripts (in alignment with messaging guidance), planning filming, hiring crew when needed.
    • studio or on-location video shoots; coordinate travel; schedule talent; and travel on-location to set up cameras, lights, and audio.
    • editing and project managing video products; color correct footage and add motion graphics, sound design elements, and subtitles; deliver in all required formats.
  • Project manage marketing requests from ideation to final delivery, pitching ideas in support of the request, writing creative briefs, creating production plans and schedules, and meeting deadlines with deliverables in a variety of run times and sizes, primarily for social media, but also online and broadcast advertising, and more.
  • Film HRC events, actions, press conferences, rallies, candidate events, field marketing events, and more.
  • Develop HRC’s rapid response videos with an eye toward digital engagement. When news breaks that affects the LGBTQ+ community, this position will work on a video response as fast as possible. To this end, this position may need to:
    • Work in graphics: Read and translate complicated data and information into easy-to-interpret data visualizations or explainers.
    • Optimize for Channels: version out HRC video products for Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to maximize KPIs, including video views, shares, click-throughs, and email acquisition.
    • Repackage Material: Identify opportunities to repackage and recut existing footage that fits into current HRC Action campaigns and allows the team to better capitalize on rapid-response opportunities.
  • Manage short deadlines and quick turnaround times while maintaining a high standard of quality in video production.
  • Look for ways to create viral hits that will help change hearts and minds
  • Use data and analytics to inform video content creation and optimize video engagement on social media.
  • This position also leans into substantive storytelling and derivative content production for some of our foundation programs, especially HRC’s Youth and Family Programming and HBCU Programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience required with at least five years in a video production position. Excellent portfolio of Video projects from concept to completion. Experience producing quick-hit digital and with an eye to viral videos in the style of NowThis News, AJ+, or 60SecondDocs.
  • Strong skills with Adobe CS, Microsoft, and social media.
  • Willingness to be a team player with a positive attitude, as well as the ability to manage multiple projects, meet tight deadlines, and focus on follow-up.
  • Experience working with diverse groups of stakeholders, being calm under pressure, and managing a diversity of opinions on each project.
  • Experience working in the field, filming in a variety of locations, while problem solving everything from logistics to equipment issues. Advanced experience shooting with large format cameras with interchangeable lenses.
  • Organized and detail oriented, with strong written & verbal communication skills.
  • Flexibility with work schedule; this position requires frequent travel including evening and weekend work often 30%-50% of the time.
  • Personal interest in and commitment to LGBTQ+ rights required.
