Job Description
Chronicle Heritage is seeking an Associate Architectural Historian to expand our team of experienced, motivated, and engaged historic preservation specialists in California. The Associate Architectural Historian will provide technical and regulatory assistance to guide municipal, state, and federal projects through the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), and California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) processes. The Associate Architectural Historian will assist in efforts to identify buildings, structures, and objects including districts and landscapes, and will be responsible for NRHP, California Register of Historical Resources (CRHR), and local register significance evaluations and assessments of effect. The Associate Architectural Historian will also apply the Secretary of Interior (SOI) Standards for Rehabilitation and develop and implement creative historic preservation mitigation, including Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS)/Historic American Engineering Record (HAER)/Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) documentation, oral histories, interpretive displays, and video documentaries. The Associate Architectural Historian will work on a wide variety of projects, including:
  • Historic property surveys and significance evaluations
  • Federal, state, and local level historic preservation compliance
  • NHPA Section 106 and Section 110 compliance
  • NEPA and CEQA compliance
  • Section 4(f) Compliance
  • Historic contexts, historic structure, district, and landscape reports
  • National (NRHP), state (CRHR), and local register nominations
  • Historic preservation/management planning
  • HABS/HAER/HALS documentation
  • Heritage management plans
  • Mills Act
  • Mitigation planning and implementation
  • Interpretive planning and exhibits
  • Historic resource photogrammetry and three-dimensional documentation
Hire Type: Full-time, hourly
Schedule: Monday-Friday, standard business hours
Location: California
Job Duties:
  • Work with our team of cultural resource professionals to undertake historic resource surveys and other investigative work related to the identification, evaluation, and assessment of effects to historic properties
  • Prepare technical reports and associated documentation
  • Assist with the development of proposals and cost estimates
  • Maintain regular communication with clients to keep them informed of project progress, project schedule review, and ensure all project needs are being addressed in a timely manner and within budget
  • Assist with coordinating project review with state and federal agencies, including various SHPOs
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in history, art history, historic preservation, or a related field
  • Meet or exceeds the SOI Standards for History or Architectural History
  • 2+ years of professional experience as an Architectural Historian
  • Demonstrable experience in completing historical resource assessments and associated documents/reports
  • Experience with CEQA
  • Experience with Caltrans Section 106 Programmatic Agreement
  • Ability to conduct pedestrian surveys, including walking in rough terrain and challenging weather

  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and Adobe Acroba
