Job Description
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Department of Theatre and Dance at Montclair State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor of Costume Design beginning September 1, 2024. This position supports our BFA Design, Technology and Management program, while contributing to the large and active Theatre and Dance Department as a whole. This faculty member will teach Costume Design and Technology and other related courses, as well as designing department productions, mentoring and advising students in Costume, hair and make-up design, and contributing to our departmental administration and mission.
In addition to teaching responsibilities, the successful candidate will be an active contributor to the leadership and governance of the department and program. Candidates will participate in strategic planning, curriculum review and development, student mentoring, and other initiatives that strengthen the excellence of our department and the University. This includes guiding students through production Costume Design and construction, hair and make-up design, coordinating guest designers, working with our Costume Shop, advising on seasons and performances, and supporting recruitment efforts. We seek engaged faculty members who will help enrich our collaborative, interdisciplinary environment.
The ideal candidate will bring professional Costume Design experience from theatre, film, television, or related media. We seek faculty who are committed to continuing their creative practice in order to bring cutting-edge industry knowledge into the classroom. Ongoing professional activity is expected to advance the University's reputation and represent the quality of our faculty and programs on national and global platforms.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must have an MFA or terminal degree and a strong record of university-level teaching excellence and student mentorship. Demonstrated leadership ability in the classroom, commitment to a liberal arts environment, and experience guiding student designers are highly valued. Expertise in makeup, wigs, and other technical theatre crafts is also preferred. Faculty are expected to maintain an active creative practice, so demonstrated national and/or international design experience is expected.
In their application, candidates should address their approach to teaching and mentorship, their creative research trajectory, and speak directly to how their background and approach could contribute to the Design, Technology, and Management program and to the Department as a whole.
THE DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND DANCE:
The Department of Theatre and Dance is committed to melding intensive training in live theatrical performance and production with a strong foundation in critical analysis and the study of social and historical contexts. The classrooms, shops, rehearsal halls and stages are laboratories wherein students participate collectively and individually in this exciting, vital synergy.
