Position Focus:

Reporting to the Director of the Office of LGBTQ Resources, the Assistant/Associate Director (AD)* provides direct support, advocacy, and administrative support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, nonbinary, and other sexual- and gender-minority students, staff, faculty, and alumni and is responsible for a range of diverse LGBTQ programs, projects, and outreach on campus.
The work of the AD primarily falls into three broad areas – community building, advocacy, and outreach/education with a particular focus on: working with the Director in strategic planning, financial management, program assessment, and departmental reporting, providing day-to-day management of the center including organizing and maintaining the physical space and online presence (website, social media, Yale Connect, e-mail list serves), supervising, developing, and evaluating student staff (graduate coordinators, undergraduate student assistants and peer liaisons, group facilitators, and/or interns), coordinating signature programs and annual traditions (e.g., staff trainings, open houses, orientations, family weekends, heritage months, queer holidays and observances, leadership roundtables, Bulldog Days, and Commencement and alumni-engagement activities), working with cultural centers and campus resources to create joint initiatives and culturally inclusive environments at the center and across the university, advising and supporting affiliated LGBTQ organizations with events and initiatives, as needed, offering advising, supportive counseling, and mental health referrals to students in need with special attention to populations such as LGBTQ people of color, queer women, bisexual+, First-Generation, Pell-eligible, international, and multiracial students, coordinating LGBTQ-specific training and workshops for student leaders, staff and faculty who have an impact on the campus climate, assisting the Director with educational outreach efforts to student groups, residential colleges, graduate and professional schools, and other community stakeholders; and developing and maintaining support mechanisms and resources for LGBTQ community members and allies including local and national networks that reach diverse LGBTQ community members at various stages of identity development or community engagement.
The title will be Assistant or Associate Director, commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.

Essential Duties

1. Oversees the advancement and growth of the program. Gives direction and leadership supporting the philosophy, mission, strategy, and annual goals and objectives. Assumes primary accountability for disseminating and publishing all program information to create public awareness and support of the program. 2. Works closely with leadership, internal and external colleagues, and community residents to further develop and implement strategic plans. 3. Identifies, solicits, and cultivates community partnerships and collaborations to assist in the development and growth of the program. Develops the metrics to identify and measure the success of the program. Responsible for measurements of grant success and related evaluation. 4. Assists in identifying and evaluating potential future funding sources, and contributes to the submission of grants and contracts supporting the program, including the annual submission and writing of all content areas and budgetary sections of grant applications. Develops and manages the program’s operating budget. 5. Develops the administrative infrastructure of the program. Manages human resource and administrative functions of the program, including staffing and hiring, supervision, performance development, counseling and discipline, if warranted. Oversees and manages information systems, facilities, and space needs. 6. Investigates, identifies, implements, and oversees the maintenance of systems to gather, track, and report information to support the initiatives of the program. Tracks all program activities and regularly informs leadership of progress on each initiative. Recommends structural or programmatic adjustments, changes or additions based on full knowledge of missions, goals, and objectives. 7. Initiates, designs, and manages the compilation of program communications; identifying outreach potential, and promoting philanthropic and collaborative support of the program. Contributes to the development and assists in the management of content on the program’s website and monitors all changes and additions to the editorial content. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in a related field and four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated understanding of sexual orientation and gender identity-related issues, trends, and needs, especially pertaining to college students. Competency in working with individuals and groups with a wide array of identity and life experiences, including gender, sexuality, class, race/ethnicity, disability, culture, religion.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to convey complex concepts and to communicate with students, faculty, staff and community members in a manner that promotes dialogue and understanding. Skills in creating and conducting presentations and effective public speaking.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated ability to foster a supportive/student-centered environment, and to maintain a balanced perspective. Ability to advise students, showing good judgment about when to make referrals, set boundaries, and equip students with skills and strategies to engage in self-advocacy.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Organizational skills, including ability to prioritize, to respond to changing needs and circumstances, and to carry out multiple assignments in a timely fashion. Skill in independently researching questions and making appropriate contacts.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Experience effecting change; ability to build relationships and maintain trust, assess and balance the needs of various stakeholders, and identify and advocate for achievable solutions. Ability to identify and proactively respond to problems or emerging needs. Ability to balance needs of students with office and institutional objectives.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Master’s degree in Higher Education, Counseling, LGBTQ / Ethnic Studies, or a similar field. Experience in university or community cultural centers working with LGBTQ populations, especially LGBTQ people of color, queer women, and/or bi+ communities. Facilitator experience in unconscious bias, bystander intervention, social justice, or DEIB topics.
