The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) at UT Health San Antonio invites applications for the position of Assistant or Associate Dean of Student Affairs. The GSBS is one of six schools at UT Health San Antonio, which is the premier academic research center in the seventh largest city in the country and is a federally recognized Hispanic-Serving Institution. UT Health San Antonio is a chief catalyst for San Antonioโs thriving $40.2-billion-dollar health care and biosciences industry and ranks 6th in Texas for NIH funding. The GSBS offers over twenty academic programs consisting of Certificate (4), MS (8), and PhD (9) degrees. The GSBS has nearly 400 graduate students and over 600 graduate faculty members.
Position Summary:
The Assistant/Associate Dean will report to the GSBS Dean. The successful candidate must possess strong leadership and collaborative skills and the ability to direct and enhance the educational experience for both potential and current students. The successful candidate must also: 1) have a demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, 2) exhibit a high degree of initiative and organization as well as an ability to juggle multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment, 3) be solution-oriented and have demonstrated problem-solving experience, 4) have excellent communication skills, 5) possess outstanding management and customer service skills, and 6) have experience interacting with and serving as an advocate for a broad range of Student populations.
The Assistant/Associate Dean will engage with numerous institutional resources including the Title IX office, Student Life, ADA office, Office of International Services and Financial Aid. The Assistant/Associate Dean also has direct reporting lines from other areas within the GSBS, most notably, the Office of Student Success, which is responsible for Career and Professional Development, Alumni Engagement, Community Outreach and campus climate activities. The position requires on the order of 70% effort,if there is a concurrent faculty appointment.
The major responsibilities of the Assistant/Associate Dean of Student Affairs are:
Supporting graduate studentโs progress and retention throughout the program starting with student recruitment through graduation.
Establishing and overseeing strategies for student involvement in all aspects of school service activities.
Overseeing a large portfolio of yearly student awards, scholarships and recognitions.
Strategic oversight of a multitude of current and future campus climate initiatives.
Strategic oversight of a multitude of current and future wellbeing programs and initiatives.
Overseeing the development and engagement of a large portfolio of Student organizations.
Providing leadership and developing communication strategies for campus and program information to prospective and current students.
Working with leadership in the other five UT Health San Antonio schools to develop institutional academic policies and points of collaboration.
Overseeing major events/ceremonies such as orientation, candidacy, and commencement.
Managing conflict resolution between students and faculty mentors including management of non-academic grievances and student mistreatment.
Coordinating with institutional services to support student access to supportive resources.
Qualifications:
A doctoral degree and background in biomedical science or a related field is required.
Experience with grant writing and mentoring students would be beneficial but is not required.
Will require a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.

Benefits Overview
UT Health San Antonio offers an excellent benefits package for its employees. Employees who work at least 20 hours a week, with an appointment of at least 4.5 months, are eligible for benefits.
Medical - UT SELECT Medical insurance is offered free for employees and administered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas. Family members can be added to the plan through payroll deduction. Retirement - Employees are eligible for either the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) or the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP). TRS is a defined benefit retirement plan which UT Health matches employee contributions. ORP is for eligible faculty staff employees. Voluntary retirement programs are also available to invest before- or after-tax dollars with the choice of five quality retirement plan providers.
Time Off- A generous leave program offers multiple paid leave options:
Front-loaded Paid Time Off: 128 to 208 hours (16 to 26 days) of Paid Time Off based on years of service, given at the start of each fiscal year. PTO may be prorated in year one based on date of hire.
Extended Illness Bank: 8 hours (1 day) accrued per month which can be used for illness or injury after one day of Paid Time Off is taken.
Paid Family Leave: Up to 240 hours (6 weeks) to care for a spouse, child, or parent after 6 months of consecutive employment.
Holidays: 12 set paid holidays each year plus three floating holidays, which can be used anytime during the fiscal year.
FSAs- Employees can enroll in flexible spending accounts (FSAs) to set aside money from earnings before taxes for qualifying dependent day care expenses or out-of-pocket health care expenses.
