I. Position Information

Title: Assistant Professor of Theatre

Division: Academic Affairs

Department: School of Humanities, Arts, and Design

10 Month Position


II. Position Summary

This position will support and expand our current offerings in Theatre and Performing Arts. The Assistant Professor of Theatre will teach foundational undergraduate Theatre courses in areas such as acting, directing, set, design, production, etc. This faculty member will also direct productions throughout the academic year as well as develop and maintain summer theatre coursework and programming. Additional duties include advising student, assisting in student recruitment, and developing partnerships with arts programs and educational institutions in order to facilitate summer theatre programming. Engaging in these activities, the Assistant Professor of Theatre will help to build the Performing Arts minor degree into a BA degree program at Chaminade University.

IV. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach the required work load credits per semester in the undergraduate programs (foundational undergraduate Theatre courses in areas such as acting, directing, set design, production, etc.) and developing and maintaining summer theatre coursework and programming
  • Direct productions throughout the academic year HR 08.23.23
  • Actively participate in division and university related activities and committees, the accreditation process, curriculum development, and scholarship (teaching, grant writing, research, publishing, and community service)
  • Assists in recruitment of students
  • Develops partnerships with arts programs and educational institutions to facilitate theatre programming and outreach to the community
  • Advise students
  • Adhere to duties as described in the Faculty Handbook
  • Develop a professional development plan and demonstrates a trajectory that promotes scholarship, community service, and life-long learning
  • Remain current in the latest industry practices, standards, equipment, research, and technology

VI. Education and Experience

Minimum

  • M.F.A. or Ph.D. in Theatre, Drama, Acting, Directing, Stage Design, or a Related Performance Arts Field
  • Demonstrated evidence of skills appropriate to the role of producer, including
  • experience or training in an applied field of Theatre and/or experience in a collaborative production process
  • At least three years of experience teaching all elements of Theatre production in a post-secondary environment
  • Demonstrated experience working with a diverse population of students, especially first-generation and Native Hawaiian students


Preferred


  • Evidence of excellent and effective teaching methods and innovative pedagogical approaches to teaching Theatre and Performing Arts
  • Experience in developing creative and performing arts opportunities for Native Hawaiian and Pacific Island students
  • Demonstrated experience in organizing performing arts productions, festivals, and events—including developing partnerships, advertising and marketing arts productions, recruiting students for performance and technical roles in productions
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, advise, and mentor Theatre and Performing Arts students
  • Demonstrated ability to engage in program and school recruitment and service activities
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain a record of creative/scholarly work suitable for tenure and promotion
  • Background and experience in creating curriculum for a Performing Arts and/or Theatre program at the post-secondary level


VII. Physical Requirements

Duties involve light work in an office and community setting and requires a minimum of physical effort with intermittent sitting, standing, climbing stairs, and walking inclines. Must be able to lift 20 pounds, walk the campus with ease, and have excellent motor skills. Must have finger dexterity. Must be able to communicate information and ideas so that others will understand.


VIII. Other Requirements:

  • This is a full time, exempt position. Forty hours per week (M-F) will be the general rule. However, depending on the project cycles and workflow demands of the department, additional hours or workday schedule changes may be occasionally required. Must be willing and able to work occasional nights and weekends and a varying schedule
  • Performs such similar, comparable or related duties as may be assigned or required
  • Observes all safety and health regulations and works in accordance with safe work procedures and policies of the University. Reports unsafe acts/conditions and injuries in a timely and proper manner
