Job Summary:
Hawai'i Pacific University (HPU) is a private, non-profit institution and Hawaii's largest private university with its core campus in the heart of Honolulu's business district. Hawaii Pacific University, Graduate College of Health Sciences is seeking candidates for a full-time Director of Students at the rank of assistant or associate professor for its developing hybrid Master of Medical Science - Physician Assistant (MMS-PA) program. This 24-month program is a blend of online and on-campus activities which allows the faculty member to live remote to the HPU campus. However, MMS-PA faculty members must be able to travel and stay in Honolulu for designated time periods each academic year.
Director of Students candidates should possess excellent communication skills and strong computer skills to meet the needs of our online didactic instructional format. We desire a team-oriented colleague who is willing and able to collaborate and share instructional methods and student-learning activities. We are eager to identify candidates who show a genuine appreciation of evidence-based teaching, integration of technology in the learning environment, and building a student-centered community that aligns with the values of HPU and the PA Program within the online classroom. Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess strong knowledge and experience with student remediation and be a champion for student success.
The Director of Students is a full-time, twelve-month, principal faculty position. The Director of Students will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and assessing student advising/coaching activities, student remediation, DEI related programming, and assessing benchmarks of student success. The Director of Students will also serve as the PA program liaison with HPU Center for Academic Success. In addition to these administrative duties, the Director of Students is considered a principal faculty member of the PA program and will have instructional responsibilities and required to fulfill service and scholarly requirements of HPU faculty.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Earned Masters degree in PA studies or a doctoral degree in a health profession field of study
  • At least three years of experience as a clinically practicing PA or health care profession aligned with professional doctoral degree
  • At least one year of faculty experience in a PA or medical program
  • Demonstrated evidence of teaching effectiveness
  • Ability to do healthcare related original research, scholarship, or creative work
  • Evidence of commitment to student success

  • License or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant in Hawaii or the state of residence

Other Qualifications:
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship and relocation allowance is not available for this position
  • Able to teach classes online and/or in-person during days, evenings, and weekends
  • Ability to work during regular business hours in the Hawai'i Standard time zone
  • Report to work obligations to support the department and may require work during HPU's winter break, spring break, and holidays, if necessary
  • Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy
  • Upon hire, candidate must have reliable transportation to facilitate travel to HPU worksites and other locations as required by the position. This includes access to an airport with regular flights to Honolulu, a valid driver's license, and a personal or rental vehicle that is legally registered and insured
  • Successful candidate will be able to work in an environment that utilizes excellent time and stress management skills

Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions
The Director of Students holds a principal faculty appointment and has administrative, academic, service, and scholarship responsibilities consistent with the mission and philosophy of the academic program. This individual demonstrates competence in teaching and implementing strategies for student success. In addition, the Director of Students primary responsibilities are to plan, coordinate, facilitate, administer, and monitor activities on behalf of the academic program under the direction of the Program Director and in coordination with other principal and instructional faculty. These activities include but are not limited to the following:
1. Administrative Responsibilities (30%)
  • Coordinates and oversees the student success program to include:
    1. Develop student coaching/advisement policy and program
    2. Matching of Students with both faculty coaches and peer support partners
    3. Ensuring student coaching/advisement and counseling supports their professional development and is completed in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • Develop and implement a process to track PA student academic performance and progress from matriculation to graduation that will allow for prompt identification of deficiencies in knowledge or skills and establish a means for remediation
  • Ensure that students accepted into the PA program have completed any outstanding academic requirements prior to matriculation
  • Assists in the coordination of and carrying out student orientation
  • Serves as program liaison with the HPU Center for Academic Success
  • Lead the program development of student remediation policies that are informed by best practices in PA education and higher education
  • Oversees the academic and professional behavior performance of Students, to include grade reporting; academic progression, retention, withdrawal, deceleration and dismissal; professional conduct, self- and peer-evaluations, and election of class officers
  • Coordinates functions of the Student Professionalism Review Committee
  • Assist the Program Director in developing and updating student, faculty, and program policies and procedures as reflected in the PA Student Handbook and PA Policy and Procedure Manual
  • Works with the Program Director, Director of Didactic Education and Director of Clinical Education to ensure all remediation policies, procedures, and practices are following accreditation standards
  • Works with the Director of Didactic Education and Director of Clinical Education to report academic outcomes and assist the Program Director with the program self-study

2. Teaching (45%)
Teaching is the primary responsibility of Regular Faculty and specific functions include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Develop syllabi for assigned courses that align with course descriptions and established learning outcomes and provides for appropriate class activities throughout the semester
  • Plan and deliver individual classes via distance education or face to face instruction that aligns with the course syllabi and other requirements of the University in areas of content expertise
  • Facilitate small group synchronous sessions?
  • Provide instruction during on-campus immersions?
  • Provide academic counseling and contribute to student remediation
  • Demonstrate a command of the discipline and skill in presenting instruction effectively in the context of an integrated curriculum
  • Maintain accurate and complete records on student performance, use appropriate measures and evaluate student performance on the basis of established student learning outcomes, provide timely feedback to students and assign grades that are an accurate and fair evaluation of student work
  • Submit grades and any other required documentation in a timely manner
  • Serve as a faculty advisor/academic coach to students to assist them in understanding the curriculum and mentor them as they prepare for clinical education and their careers
  • Promote student success by following attendance related requirements found in the University and MMS-PA Program policies and handbooks
  • Use student course and instructor evaluation data to develop plans for continued improvement
  • Meet deadlines and follow directions of the Program Director and Director of Didactic Education
  • Evaluate the teaching of colleagues through the process of peer review as requested
  • Participate in ongoing program evaluation and accreditation activities
  • Participate in the review and revise, as necessary, of the mission statement, goals and competencies of the Program
  • Participate in the admission process for applicant selection
  • Prepare Professional Development Plans and reappointment/promotion applications according to established University/College guidelines

3. Scholarship and Professional Development (10%)
Faculty members are expected to serve as professional role models to students and colleagues in scholarly activity.
  • Regularly engage in scholarship activities that promote the University's distinctive mission and positions the PA program as a leader in PA education??
  • Keep abreast of the new knowledge in the field to ensure courses content, instructional materials and techniques, and teaching methods are current and appropriate, and to participate where appropriate, in school or university-sponsored curriculum development programs and projects?
  • Engage in distinctive course and academic program development efforts; participate in professional colloquia, seminars, and workshops; and share ideas and the results of scholarly endeavors with peers both at the university and in the larger academic community?
  • Maintain NCCPA Certification and requirements for Continued Medical Education

4. Service(10%)
Engage in service to department, school or college, and the university in ways that extend and enrich the university's academic programs and its governance.
  • Attend orientation programs and Faculty Assembly meetings and participate in academic duties?
  • Participate in academic governance of program. Participate in committees; course, program and curriculum area coordination; curricular development; instructional workshops and activities within own curricular areas, policy and program review; or other learning assessments?
  • Serve as representatives on school or college level and university level committees of the Faculty Assembly, as well as on other task forces and committees that assist the chair of the Faculty Assembly and/or the deans in the formation of academic policies and related matters?
  • Assist with co-curricular activities to include organization of, participation in, or presentation of faculty forums or workshops; advising and sponsorship of clubs and societies; participation in, organization of, providing guidance and assistance to extra-curricular or co-curricular university events such as banquets, the literary magazine, the athletic program, intercultural events, theatrical productions, guest speaker forums, or graduation ceremonies?
  • May include specific accomplishments as a voluntary or elected member of a Faculty Assembly or school or college level committee; mentoring other faculty; program review activities; coordinating training or other events; and recruitment activities?
  • Colleges will further determine and articulate specific expectations for university service?

5. Other
Perform other related duties as appropriate

  • May engage in clinical practice as a Physician Assistant
  • Engage in community service by providing volunteer assistance to an agency or organization, particularly as that assistance derives from professional knowledge and expertise or provide pro bono (unpaid professional) services to local, state, regional, national, or international organization.
  • Actively participate as an effective member of a team by completing assigned duties, accepting additional assignments or reassignments.
