We invite applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Structural Engineering, funded by general university funds. The successful candidate will be appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering (CECE). This appointment is subject to both approval and funding availability, and aims for a target start date of August 1, 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter. The CECE Department is devoted to academic excellence in both teaching and research. We offer B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees and maintain an undergraduate program accredited by ABET. Currently, the department has an enrollment of approximately 300 undergraduate and 60 graduate students and is supported by a dedicated faculty of 19 members. Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teaching: 1) Lead courses in structural loading, structural steel, concrete design, and related civil engineering topics; 2) Integrate sustainability concepts across all courses; 3) Develop advanced courses based on areas of specialization; 4) Deliver content through various distance learning platforms when needed.
  • Student Guidance: 1) Participate on committees in charge of candidates for advanced degrees; and perform related tasks as assigned; 2) Oversee independent studies, practicums, and internships; 3) Act as an academic advisor.
  • Research and Publication: 1) Establish a research program with external funding; 2) Ensure research findings are published in top-tier scholarly journals.
  • Institutional Service and Community Engagement: 1) Engage actively in departmental, college, and university committee roles; 2) Offer services to both professional and general communities aligning with your academic expertise.
  • Curriculum Development: 1) Contribute to the creation of curriculum materials and innovative teaching methods; 2) Participate in initiatives towards the creation of place-based/Hawaii-based curriculum to impact Structural Engineering knowledge.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: Support the recruitment, retention, and graduation of Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islanders, and other underrepresented populations in Engineering.
  • Strategic Alignment: Participate in implementing the Native Hawaiian principles from the UH Manoa Strategic Plan.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • An earned Ph.D. from a college or university of recognized standing ("All but dissertation" will be considered; degree must be earned before date of hire) in civil engineering.
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to teaching excellence and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels and the ability to teach students from different backgrounds with diverse life experiences and learning styles.
  • Demonstrated scholarly achievement, evidenced by a track record of conducting research and publishing scholarly materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach graduate courses in area of specialty, as well as undergraduate courses in civil engineering.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to engage successfully in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic environment.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience in enhancing the resilience and sustainability of coastal communities.
  • Experience in structural optimization informed by smart city technologies.
  • Experience in extreme-load design for steel, concrete, or composite structures (e.g., for hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, impact, or blast loading).
  • Research emphasis applicable to or experience with Hawaii and/or the Asia/Pacific region
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Ability to recruit, retain, and graduate Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and/or other underrepresented populations in Engineering.
  • Willingness towards the creation of placed-based and/or Hawai'i based curriculum.
  • Willingness to learn about and implement Native Hawaiian, Indigenous, and/or place-based principles into curriculum, programming, and work culture.
