Department Information

We are a supportive, cooperative, and collaborative department with 17 faculty located on UNG's Dahlonega, Gainesville, and Oconee campuses. The Dahlonega physics program offers a B.S. degree in physics, a concentration in astrophysics, a physics teacher education pathway, and a 3+2 physics/engineering dual-degree program with multiple partnering institutions. Department facilities include extensive equipment for introductory and upper-level labs, a digital planetarium, and an astronomical observatory with 24-in and 28-in telescopes located 4 miles from campus. The Department of Physics & Astronomy is focused on student success through implementation of high impact practices. We have a Learning Assistant (LA) program and a physics teacher education pathway to help students seeking careers in secondary education. We also promote original research experiences, global engagement, and computation throughout the curriculum to help prepare students for a variety of impactful careers. Our department is committed to public engagement with several outreach programs, such as free public programming at our observatory, free planetarium shows, and participation in local public talks. Our faculty coordinate several outreach programs targeting multicultural and underserved populations in the local region.

Job Summary

The University of North Georgia is seeking applications for an engineering position on the Dahlonega Campus at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2024. Of particular interest are candidates who can bring engineering instruction and projects in renewable energy or sustainability. Ability to partner with regional industry will be viewed favorably. Over the past five years the department has averaged 19 bachelor's and 18 associate degree graduates per year. It has had considerable success in placing its graduates into graduate programs, high-school teaching positions, and technical jobs.

Responsibilities

• The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and be responsible for teaching undergraduate engineering and associated laboratories.
• Excellence in teaching, and university/community service are requirements for promotion.
• Advising students, service to the university and community, active participation in departmental activities, maintaining a collegial work environment, and professional development are expected.
• Scholarly activity and engineering projects with students are expected.

Required Qualifications

• Applicants are required to have an PhD in Engineering, Physics or closely related field.
• The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching.
