Job Description Summary
The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at Eastern Oregon University (EOU) invites applications for a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor of Communication Studies, with focus and expertise specifically in Public Relations. Position reports directly to the Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.
The College offers baccalaureate degrees in Communication Studies and in Public Relations, both fully delivered on campus and online. The successful candidate would serve as the faculty lead in the new Public Relations degree, while contributing expertise and teaching in both degree pathways. The new BA/BS in Public Relations is housed in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences to maintain a foundation in human communication, the humanities, digital rhetoric and media, and applied communication while drawing on interdisciplinary knowledge and skills in writing, social sciences, marketing and statistical analysis. We are looking for applicants who can teach a range of undergraduate courses such as public relation techniques, writing and production, cases and campaigns, and social media. Use of data and visual analytics, as well as ethical communication, to address Public Relations opportunities and challenges in today's communication environment are key components of the curriculum, as well. Additionally, candidates will have opportunities to create curriculum and teach subjects that reflect their specific expertise in areas such as brand storytelling, strategic communication, risk or crisis communication, and/or other high demand skills areas.
Preference will be given to candidates who have a demonstrated competency for teaching students on-campus and online, bringing a dynamic, student-centered approach. We seek collaborative, creative individuals with a demonstrated commitment to building student agency through high impact pedagogy, making college success possible for at-risk students, and creating inclusive college cultures that represent the values and experiences of all students. Student-centered, project-based learning is highly valued at EOU, and candidates would be invited to bring to our campus their experience and innovative ideas for establishing high impact student engagement opportunities.
This is a dynamic time for these programs at EOU, and the College will be looking for a creative and collaborative colleague who will be involved in revising, expanding, and creating undergraduate curricula that supports our liberal arts and professional preparation educational mission. Though outstanding teaching serves Eastern's primary mission, the successful candidate will also be expected to continue their research agenda, perform university service, and engage in community outreach.
This is a 9-month, full-time, tenure-track position beginning September 16, 2024.Review of applications will begin on April 12, 2024. Only complete files of qualified applicants will be reviewed. The position will remain open until filled. Applications received after this date may not be given full considerations
Responsibilities
The typical tenure-track teaching contract at EOU includes 36 credits of teaching (appx. 3 courses per quarter) and 9 credits devoted to sustaining a research agenda, service to the institution, and professional outreach to the community. General responsibilities include advising students, working collaboratively with colleagues and community members, engaging in scholarly activity, and providing service to the university, community and/or the profession.
In the first year, and in consultation with the Dean, course release may be offered to this candidate to continue building out new program recruitment and teaching/learning materials.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A PhD in Communications, Writing, Public Relations, related or interdisciplinary field. ABD candidates on schedule to complete PhD requirements on or before September 2024 are encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching both lower level and upper level college-level courses
  • Ability to create and/or redesign curriculum in collaboration with Communication colleagues and faculty from adjacent disciplines
  • Commitment to personal and professional growth of students, including communication competence, written and oral skills, problem solving abilities, connection to community through experiential learning, and upper level Capstone and research courses

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience working with rural, first-generation, and online adult student populations, with a strong commitment to a pedagogy of access, equity and diversity
  • Experience developing and sustaining group-based, applied learning opportunities for undergraduate students, including internships, practica, and external partnerships with industry and organizations
  • Experience, training or certification in using an LMS (EOU uses Canvas) to deliver coursework and engage students meaningfully in their learning.
  • Professional experience developing or managing social media campaigns, podcasts, and/or other media production is highly sought.
