Assistant Professor of Biology (Tenure Track)
The Avila University School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in the College of Arts & Sciences, guided by the mission of excellence in teaching and learning, and dedicated to the service to the Dear Neighbor, is actively seeking a full-time Tenure TrackAssistant Professor of Biology. The successful candidate would need to be able to teach general biology and upper-division courses in the areas of ecology, animal behavior, environmental science, organismal biology, and other related topics. This is an academic, 10-month, tenure-track appointment, eligible for annual renewal based on performance. The appointment will begin in August 2024.
Responsibilities:
- Teach equivalent to 12 credit hours per semester (4:4 load for Fall:Spring semesters).
- Teach lecture and laboratory courses focusing on Ecology, Environmental Science, Animal Behavior, Organismal Biology, and advanced courses in the applicant’s area of expertise that will strengthen the existing programs in Biology and Professional Health Sciences.
- Create an environment in the classroom which facilitates effective student learning through the use of a wide range of teaching strategies and which motivates students to think, to question, and to critically analyze.
- Develop course-based undergraduate research experiences within advanced biology courses.
- Develop and maintain professional scholarship with the opportunity to mentor students as part of our honors capstone research experience.
- Participate in the service and student mentoring efforts for the School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). This will include developing, implementing, and assessing biology curriculum.
- Provide service to the program, school, college, university and community.
- Champion diversity, build an inclusive culture and learning experience, and maintain an equitable learning environment.
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Biology, or a closely related discipline, completed by date of appointment.
- Doctoral candidates with All but Dissertation (ABD) status would also be given full consideration for the position if the completion date is in the near future.
- Full-time faculty will be academically and experientially qualified and maintain expertise in previously mentioned areas of responsibility.
- Successful candidates should showcase their work and experience in contributing to a climate that supports a diverse student body, serves first-generation college students, multilingual learners, and contributions to equity and social justice through their work.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Postdoctoral and/or industrial experience is desirable.
- Teaching experience desirable in baccalaureate education.
- Strong preference will be given to candidates that have demonstrated ability to incorporate evidence-based practices in undergraduate biology courses.
